I only know one of the places - garden state plaza. That is a monster mall - located at the crossroads of some very major highways. I havent been there in over 15 years - It is about an 1 hr away and we don't really go to malls - even the one by me - except for eating at a restaurant there. I think a lot of people from Manhattan go there as well - though maybe Xandu at the Meadowlands (Havent been there yet) is poaching some of its business.

However, that place always seems to be extremely busy whenever it comes up in conversation. e.g. - I was at the garden state plaza - it is a mob scene - can't even find parking.

I will sometime stop into the when dining there to buy a gift at LUSH - my daughters love that place or check out the clearance rack at American Eagle or Banana Republic.

Malls don't really serve a purpose for people in MANY locations any more. Our "local" one is being turned into medical offices. The ones that may stick around are more "tourist destinations" themselves than shopping centers. Like Disney Springs. They have "fancy" restaurants, they have inside go-carts, climbing courses, those "Upside Down" buildings, inside "outlets" and such, where the shopping is almost more like a bigger gift shop than the draw.

Some of the malls in So Cal have long ago incorporated apartments and condos to keep the foot traffic. Of course they used parking lot space so the parking can be a nightmare.

We had 3 local malls. One has been demo’d and EpicGames was going to build theirHQ there but, that fell thru and the land has just set empty for the last 3 years. Another one is on the verge of closing and the oldest one still just keeps on tickin. Covid and the repercussions of online shopping with free returns pretty much put the choke hold on them and any future they may have. Every once in awhile during the holiday season we will go to just to see what may have changed but I don’t remember the last time we actually shopped at one.

I've not been to a mall in 7-8 years. I am retired and have no need for most of the things that I used to buy in a mall. I shop online and can buy whatever I want without going to a mall.

I live 20 minutes from the Mall of America, one of the largest in the country. Haven't been there in many years. Boomers are getting too old for all that walking. Except of course for the mall walkers that like to exercise indoors in the winter. Many malls allow walkers in before the stores open.

When I lived there the Mall of America was a great place to go in the middle of winter when it was 20 below. Being inside had the feel of summer time and helped with cabin fever.

My friend who still lives nearby says there aren’t many stores inside anymore and it’s more an entertainment venue now.

Here's a fun fact about the Mall of America: MOA does not use a central heating system; instead, 70 degrees is maintained year-round with passive solar energy from 1.2 miles of skylights and heat generated from lighting, store fixtures + body heat.

I live near Garden State Plaza in Paramus, about 20 minutes away. It's seriously a mob scene every hour of the day--except on Sundays. It's in Bergen County, NJ, which, incredibly, still has Blue Laws, so the stores are closed! There's a big AMC at one end of the mall, and we only go there on Sundays...because any other time and you can't even get a parking spot. So it's hard to believe the mall is in any danger of closing.

I was there last summer, and I can confirm there is a larger mix of entertainment and restaurants than in the past, but with that said, there are still a TON of retail stores, as the place is just huge.

I was there on a weekday, and was pleasantly surprised at how busy it still is. Busier than any other mall I have been to in the last 10 years..

Good to hear about the MoA still working.

Now I live near the Mall of Georgia for 7 years and had never been inside. Yesterday we went inside to walk and I couldn’t believe how busy it was and the variety of stores. It made me nostalgic for MoA!
