35% bonus to convert Marriott points to AA miles

I just transferred mileage (Monday) as part of a travel package and did not get the bonus miles.....miles appeared in account Tuesday night

Correct - no bonus miles when travel packages are purchased (can't remember if I read that on TUG or Flyertalk).

Thanks Winger, but the number of AA miles needed differs depending on the day of the week and the week itself. I just looked at AA, and is better to Kauai than United from Chicago.

Yes, basically what I was trying to point out is generally AA requires less miles than UA for comparable to/from trips, at least from my experience/searchings. So, all else being equal, AA miles are more valuable for me.

 Bear with me here. Suppose I transfer the miles by June 30th. Four months from now I use the AA miles to get tickets to Hawaii some of which, but not all, were miles transferred from Marriott. Then three months after that I get a hotel only certificate. AA doesn't know, and why should they care? Is AA not allowing me to use my miles if I go to a Marriott on a certificate that they had nothing to do with? We're not talking about a Marriott combined airplane/hotel package.

Effective July 1, 2010, Marriott's Family of Brands will be leaving the AAdvantage program.

This means that up until June 30th you can use Marriott Rewards points to purchase AA miles (either w/in a package or not).

After June 30th you will no longer be able to purchase AA miles using Marriott Rewards points.

the air/hotel TP are issued from Marriott together. My thinking is that air portion is what AA may get paid less $ for than if you converted MRP's directly to AA miles withOUT the hotel certif ; thus, AA does NOT want to honor bonus on the miles from TP's.

But if Steve is asking whether he can use points now for AA miles to get the AA bonus and then months from now use points for a hotel cert to use at a Marriott hotel, can AA somehow connect the two separate things and take back the bonus? (I think that's what he's asking.) I would say, yes, he can do that, because he's not using points for a travel package and AA has no idea of what hotel he will be staying at when he flies on those tickets.

The drawback is that he'll use more points for the separate miles and hotel cert as compared with the combined travel package, but does the AA bonus make it worthwhile?

Yes Susan, that's what I am asking. I don't know my plans for 2011 except that I want to go to Hawaii in December of that year as we did in December of 2009. I have had some luck in trading in for Kauai with my Aruba OC gold in the past, but who knows? So even without the benefit of the combined air/hotel I want to set myself up for not having to pay for airplane tickets to Hawaii.

I will have enough left over for a combined air/hotel trip to Europe next summer. I have had success in using British Air out of Chicago for that and they'll still be in the program. And, I could use BA miles for flights on AA.

TP does include bonus miles

The AA rep I spoke with assured me that I would receive the 35% bonus for miles that are a part of a travel package. I bought a TP package yesterday, reserved my hotel for next year and today had 120,000 AA miles received into my account. I called about the bonus and was told the 35% bonus would come within seven days. I will update you in seven days!;)

YES, let us know!

I am anxious to hear the outcome as well. Some posters on Flyertalk claim that they have spoken to AA and were told that it is easy to spot the travel package miles and they will not be given credit for the bonus. So we have conflicting reports.

if it comes to a rep's word vs the T&C's, the latter wins. The question one has to ask is whether they are willing to convert miles using a TP is IF they are OK IF the bonus miles do not kick in. I am leaning towards NOT doing it b/c I have no use in the next 12mos for a hotel certif as all my vacation time through summer 2011 has already been accounted for. However, IF the bonus miles were guaranteed for TP's, I would consider that against having to do "extra" work to move planned items (confirmed resort stays, etc) around.

The first transfers should be posting soon, so we should have some definitive reports about which packages do and don't earn the bonus points. If you're considering a package, I would check here and FlyerTalk and wait until the reports start coming in before deciding which way to go.

From what I recall of my SPG Flights & Nights redemptions, it seems like it looked identical to a 40k transfers on AA's site. I haven't done one in quite a while, though, so I can't check.

You'll be dissappointed.

Poster on Flyertalk claimed that his bonus points on a transfer (non-travel package) posted the next day with the regular miles. So, it seems no bonus points on the packages.

The 35% bonus is supposed to post a week later, so it's still a little early to tell whether package transfesr receive the bonus or not.

As I noted in the previous post, a poster on Flyertalk claimed that the base points and bonus points were in his account within 24 hours.

You're right. My miles (from a regular SPG hotel transfer, not a package) just posted (less than 48 hours!) and it included the bonus miles.
