Formerly: Marriott, ILX, Westin, Diamond, Worldmark. Timeshare free as of 12/24.
In the mid-80s we had a stereo/electronics store near us that asked for SSN every time we bought something. Cliff would refuse the clerk the information and the transaction proceeded anyway. The day he ran up against a manager who would not sell him a stereo component without an SSN was the day he walked out empty handed, never to return.

I've had my accounts frozen for years - only unfreeze them when I am going to apply for a new credit card. Honestly - I'm surprised they don't just start with them being frozen and having some sort of authentication to unfreeze as needed.

There's a website where you can check if your information was exposed in this hack:

Simply enter your first and last name, state, and year of birth. The search will instantly look for your info in the billions of records leaked online in this massive data breach. The search is free. You do NOT need to enter any other confidential personal information (such as a Social Security number).

Yup, they got me. (But I already knew that. There was a fraudulent application for state disability insurance in my name in 2021 as well as a fraudulent credit card application.)

And yup, my wife's information was exposed as well.

Our credit has been frozen for several years. I also make it a habit to go to annualcreditreport.com every 4 months to check a free credit report for both of us, rotating between the Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion reports. This way I get one free credit report annually from each of the 3 major agencies.

Now here's one you probably don't know about. There are lesser known credit agencies in addition to the big 3. Clarity (now a division of Experian) is involved in payday loans, and you can request a credit freeze there as well. Visit https://www.clarityservices.com/support/security-freeze/ to submit a freeze to prevent subprime loans from being opened. When I tried to freeze my credit online at Clarity back in 2021, the website was unable to proceed and I received a message to submit a written request.

How can I confirm this site is legit and not just gathering my personal information?

I find it ironic that this site allows you to post your birthdate. Why not add an option for your social security number as well?

Anytime some place like that asked for information they don't really need I just gave them a fake social. 123 45 6789

I can't provide any guarantees. I read about this site in several different articles in the media. Here's one:
https://ktla.com/news/local-news/check-now-was-your-ssn-exposed-in-huge-data-leak/

KTLA is a Southern California TV news station.

The search doesn't require your Social Security number. And it doesn't require your birthdate, but rather just your birth year. If the search is positive, it will however show you your full address (and also possibly past addresses) and it will show you your SS# displayed only as the final two digits. So you will know that the hack exposed your address(es) and SS number.
