25 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Dollar Stores
By Jason Notte/ Cheapism/ Business Insider/ businessinsider.com

  • Dollar stores are hugely popular in the United States.
  • While Dollar Tree keeps its prices at $1 or less, other chains like Dollar General and Family Dollar have varying price points.
  • There are several other secrets behind dollar stores, like how they keep their prices low but their gross margins high.

"The most common variety store chains in the United States tend to have "dollar" in their names, but that doesn't necessarily imply a certain cost or even mean that there are similar products in each store. We even found some items you shouldn't buy at a dollar store.

We did some digging and found out some of the secrets behind dollar stores, and why they've become such a large part of the US consumer landscape:...."

Our local Dollar Tree is the place to go for greeting cards, gift bags and bows, and everything you need for kids' birthday parties.

I don't make many trips to the Dollar Store. Afraid to buy more than half the items in there. I do get my Find a Word books, greeting cards, bows, wrapping paper and gift bags. Just be careful with the gift bags too - not that strong :)

Some other odd and ends - disposable/one time use craft items, coloring books, etc. Definitely no food. Many though do buy food. They even had a frozen food section now.

Thank you for the article.

I frequent a Dollar General that is walking distance from where I live. The article is right on as to how they operate:i.e. cluttered, disarray, boxes of merchandise on the floor, understaffed, multi-tasking employees, etc. You can find real valuess at Dollar General but have to be selective in what you buy there...
