I don't use the Points program, but I have an enrolled week which would allow me to rent points. (Unfortunately that week only generates 550 points and is deposited with II until 2020.)

I have a two week 2019 MOC reservation string that is Sat-Sat, then Sun-Sun, which leaves Saturday, 23 Feb 2019, open. If I can't get the Sat-Sat reservation I want, I may use points to stay in the resort that night. (450-600 points)
Discounted cash rack rate starts at around $500+parking.

Should I rent 2019 points now and book the room ASAP, knowing that if I am able to get the Sat-Sat I can cancel the points reservation and have them re-credited to my account for later use in 2019 and I assume 2020. Do I need to be aware of their effective (usage) date to maximize usage or does that reset with them being transferred to me?

Any reason to consider using 2018 points, since their lifespan would be more limited if I cancel the points reservation.

Thoughts?

If you rent 2019 Points you will have to use them in 2019. Rented points cannot be banked to 2020 or borrowed to 2018.

Yes, I would rent 2019 points now and book the needed night as soon as possible since the inventory is there now. I would try to match up with the room type of your Sunday-Sunday reservation so that you won't have to change rooms twice. Good luck!!

Best,

Greg

If I end up not needing them, can I then rent them out myself? Do I need to pay attention to usage year on the points, though I guess Trust points are calendar year?

(FWIW, I'll probably just do a studio OV or Garden for that one night and deal with the shuffling. We'll be going from Lahaina to MOC or MOC to Lahaina, and not sure whether we're using all or part of the Lahaina unit at this point. Mostly contingency planning, obviously.)

No. You cannot re-rent Points that you rented. Once transferred Points cannot be transferred again.

Not all Trust points are calendar year. Some have different use start and end dates. But I think you will find most of the points for rent on VPE are legacy points, and they are all calendar year. I have rarely seen Trust points listed. Due to the cost of Trust Points, I don’t think there are that many people with excess Trust Points. Most of the people with more points than they can use are Enrolled Weeks owners.

You can re-rent them, but you would have to make the reservation for the renter thus reducing their utility and your ability to make your money back.

Valid clarification to the post that I made above. Points can't be transferred again, but you can make a reservation for someone. I guess I didn't consider that angle because I have trouble thinking of that as a points rental, since the "seller" has to be involved holding the reservation all the way through check-in. To me, a points rental is when the points are truly transferred to the buyer. Making a reservation just seems like a reservation rental.
