[2012] Updated Marriott Lock-Off Info [FAQ Thread]

We have owned a 2BD lockout at Ocean Pointe for 20+ yrs and love the flexibility. We are looking for another Marriott 2BD lockout. Has the the list of Marriott resorts with lockouts been updated since list published in 2012?

Appreciate great info.

Not really, but there really haven't been any new builds where you can buy an actual week since Marriott rolled out the DC program in 2010. The new Costa Rica resort is now selling weeks though. Not sure if there are lockouts there, but there won't be resales yet either.

If you purchase a resale Marriott week in a location (USA) that has lockoff units and dedicated 2 bedrooms will you always have the option to book a lock off if one available for the dates you choose? I guess my question is the lock off designation in the contract/deed that we would agree to?

Whether a developer or resale purchase makes no difference if the week you buy has a lock off option.
It is always worth checking the contract / deed though to confirm the option.

Any resort that has lock off units and you buy into that same unit type, then you always have the option of locking off. It is of course based on availability. A resort like Harbour Lake that has over 300 2BR units but only 48 lock off. Every owner has the option to lock off but obviously not everyone can because the resort isn't all lock off units.

Even a resort like Lakeshore Reserve that has some different kind of units with 2BR and 3BR townhomes as well as deluxe and standard 2BR units and 3BR and 2BR flats that lock off and some that don't even allow you to lock off. Again based on availability.

For a resort like Ocean Pointe that is 100% lock off units there usually isn't an issue. Though sometimes they do block the ability to lock off units because of occupancy and parking issues. They don't have enough parking for one car per individual unit component as they expected many units wouldn't lock off.

I am not aware that there are any new resorts with lock outs. Perhaps Costa Rica? Marriott has been sparse on new resorts with 2BR or larger units in the last decade.

Costa Rica is all 2BR lockoffs I believe. (Only 24 units total)

We purchased a Harbor Lake dedicated 2BR 2BA unit pre construction..back then it was called Horizons by Marriot..Luckily...Marriot decided to build 2BR lock offs and we were able to exchange our 2BR unit as a 1BR and a Studio..giving us 2 Exchanges a year.

Thanks, we are looking at a resale of Willow Ridge in Branson. Do you know if they are all lockoffs or do they have dedicated 2 bedrooms as well?

Willow Ridge has both 2BR lockoffs and 2BR dedicated units. A deed there can book either based on availability at the time of the reservation.

Amazing how quickly my questions are answered!! Thanks so much to all of you!

Plus owning one or the other does not guarantee access to that type.

Although we own lock off units in both Europe and the USA and we have never failed to lock off in ~20 years, so provided you reserve early enough access to that type is unlikely to be a problem.

I agree, what I was pointing out is that some might think that owning one or the other guaranteed access and it does not, it's simply a reservation based on overall availability. Now some resorts might hold lock offs and keep them from all being locked off though that's mostly with resorts that only have lock offs.

I have searched Marriott Vacation Club web site but have been unable to locate a chart depicting the amount of points each week at each legacy resort is given. Any help is appreciated

There isn't one, its not in MVC's interest to publish it as it leads to too much complaining from owners about why one resort gets more than another. The best you have is what is reported and collected in the table linked above.
