[ 2012 ] Sirius XM discount

Read The Fine Print

I've got an offer from them $25 total for 6 months. I am tempted to do it, but I've read too many horror stories about auto renewal and failed attempts to cancel with continuing charges despite calling in. Am I right to not trust xm business practices?

Yes, you're right not to trust them

Read the fine print at the bottom of the letter. It say after six months you agree to pay the normal subscription rate and if you do the math that comes out to about $1200 for the year.

Whoever wrote the letter probably once sold TS's. :hysterical:

We might think they charge a lot, but the least we can do is post accurate info.

I bought a used vehicle and received the trial period and am now getting offers for 6 months free on annual subscription.

cancel. they will want you back. I was able to keep OnStar free for an extra 3 months beyond trial because I called to cancel.

I have a trial subscription that will expire at the end of the month. The current rate they are quoting for me to extend the subscription is $262.79 for a year, which includes XM Select radio, XM-NavTraffic and XM-NavWeather at $43.89 each. For just the XM-select radio it is $175.01. Both prices include a charge of $15.62 for a U.S. Music Royalty Fee which they say they are required to collect.

I'm waiting until it gets closer to the expiration date of the trial package to see if they offer me a better deal.

Ken is right, there is no XM package that costs $100 a month!

That's interesting, I canceled because it used to be no ads and gradually they started adding DJs that gab a lot and ads for other channels on Sirius. Sure, no commercial ads for third parties, but plenty of their own ads that are annoying because they run the same one over and over. They went from 60 min an hour of music to 45 min with 15 min of gabbing and the same 2 ads.

I just plug in my iPhone and listen to my own play lists now.

To each his own. I think the "gabbing" depends on the station you are listening to. The sixties station has alot of DJ talk because they are trying to simulate the old broadcasts from that era. I don't particularly like that.

Other stations I like play mostly music with no talk and with few promos. The high standards show on the 40s station has a great deal of talk that is directly related to the music, discussing the writers, anecdotes about singers etc. I am interested in that stuff and others might not be.

My feeling overall is that there are enough channels that I like very much to make me keep the service. Others might not like the way a particular channel presents the music that they enjoy the most and dump the service.

Not Lying

I take exception with you and Ken55 implying that I'm lying. Does not matter what is on their website. The letter we received from them to re-establish service was an offer of six months for $25 that sounded good until we read the entire offer. At the bottom of the letter in very fine print it said that after the six months expired we agreed to pay $105.58 a month for the remaining six months.

Not unlike a TS salesman they've got all kinds of pricing and gimmicks. You just have to be careful in accepting the offer they are making.

I did not think you were lying, I thought you may have been mis informed. I had the service for about 8 or 9 years now and never saw or heard of prices that high. What I've seen is around $10 a month, sometimes a couple dollars lower and sometimes a couple higher but never anywhere near even $20 a month.

I'm shocked that you were given an offer that high and am glad you read the details and did not accept it.

If this is the case, then why not just order at the stated price on the website and save a lot of $$?

In all the threads I've read on this topic over the years (mostly not on TUG) I've never heard of anyone (not one) person paying anywhere close to the amount you mention. Obviously, it's good to read the fine print, but if you take them up on the promos you need to also expect to remember to call to renew it - which they have been known to do - before it expires. This requirement for two or more calls per year is the main reason I simply pay for a year at a time and there's no question what it costs me - and based on your suggested rate, I'm paying about 10% of it, so I guess I and everyone else here (who pays less on the $25 plan every 5/6 months) did better!

XM Internet Radio

I just called to "cancel" our XM service and was able to again sign up for five months for $25. Read a post on Slickdeals about someone who has called back and was offered three months free when the balked at all offers and was able to do that for four months straight. So 12 months free.

I never though I would pay full price for this service, but I recently activated a free trial of their internet radio. My wife has started working from home and using the iPod with their app is great for her with her Sony radio with iPod dock. I would consider spending the $3.50 a month for their internet radio. They told me they don't have a bundled plan with their regular XM service.

The internet radio also works great in the timeshare unit we are currently staying in. Great to have our XM on the road.

Today was cancellation day and I did NOT want to pay 175 dollars. I called, was told he could not offer me anything, so I said OK, cancel me. He passed me off to someone else who then offered me the 25 for 5 month deal. Thanks to all of you...you are my best source when things like this come up!!

Almost 2 years later, I am back...I was cancelled out following a 3 month freebie on a new car. Itold her I was not willing to pay more than 7 dollars per month. All she could offer me was music only for about 12 per month, so I cancelled. Last time I was passed off to another person. So, now I play the waiting game..........

This was an interesting thread to have resurface as I have never had XM/Sirius until I bought a Hyundai back in late August. My 3 month trial subscription is nearing an end, and I will not pay the fees being pitched.

Like Karen, I enjoy the music and would consider something for a more reasonable price (for me under $100/year). I don't need satellite radio so why pay for it.

Just renewed for $8 per month for 5 months. Received their All Access subscription plan. Includes ALL stations plus internet listening as well. I love playing the game with these people. Let your subscription expire after 5 months. You will continue to receive service for an additional week or two. Then call and tell them you want the previous plan you had. The 5 month plan is considered a promotional plan and they will say you received the promotion already. Tell them bye bye nice to know ya and poof you receive the promotional plan again. Just remember to remove your credit card from the auto renew online because they will renew your plan at a much much higher rate.

I just looked at their current prices, and it does appear prices have gone up since I last paid for my discounted annual plan. I'm thinking about bailing also (for my car radio), but I do have a lifetime subscription (on a portable radio) that also gives me free access to Sirius through my phone. I think I may just use that in my car from now on and not pay anything except for phone data rates.

I have a radio with a car kit and a home kit and bought the lifetime subscription when I called to cancel my account. I just take the car kit when we travel and it plays through the car stereo.

I bought a new fusion last Sept and I'm still getting the 5 mo. offer on line and in the snail mail.

The problem with buying a lifetime car plan is that it's not transferable, so when you sell or wreck the car, the plan goes away.

I bought my lifetime plan on a portable radio (that I haven't used in 3 years). They tried to turn off my online access once and I had to complain to a supervisor to get it turned back on. Plus, in the terms of my agreement I can pay $75 to transfer the "lifetime" plan to up to 3 additional radios. With the free online access I kinda wonder how long it's all going to last.

I do still have to pay for the access in my car at the discounted annual rate - they would not let me transfer to that.

I just signed up for an annual after my free three months. Like others have
Said on here, I'm fine for about $75 a year. It's pushing it after that. They gave
Me all access for $89 a year. I took that and we'll see after a year. I like the
Cable news shows on my way home from work. DW just let hers go in her car
And I just got a new car and I liked it so I give it a go for a year. If they give me
That price again I'll probably renew but we'll see.
