2011 Lincoln Town Car

Was there a safe car back in the 60's? I would love to have my old 66 Chevy Malibu SS back. I can't remember if there were seat belts in it. If there were we didn't use them.

My Dad bought a brand new '65 Mustang, the first year they came out, in September of 1964. The only options he bought were:

1) backup lights (they weren't yet a standard feature),
2) a set of dash gauges (with a tachometer and clock, on either side of the steering column.)
3) - you guessed it - seatbelts. They were also not a standard feature that year. But then, he only paid $3284 for his car, brand new.

How times have changed.

I'm trying to talk my wife into this Lincoln. Her final words were cryptic. She said it's only $10,000 and if I want it get it but she doesn't think she would drive it ever. That is kind of what she said about the last motorcycle I bought and she doesn't ride it, ever.

So I think I'm golden for a Lincoln.

1 ) There are no 2012's

2) From 2007 on all the panther platform models [ Ford Crown Vic. - Merc. Grand Marquis - Lincoln TC ] were built in St. Thomas Ontario Canada -[Talbotville Plant]
The Town Car was previously built in Wixom Michigan.

3) The St Thomas plant was closed after 2011 production ended ; and all 3 panther platform models were dropped. The reason was because the cost to upgrade to new environmental standards
required for 2012 models.

4) I think there are still some local police dept's driving the Crown Vics.

5) I recall reading somewhere that the last cars came off the line in early 2012 - for export to a middle east country that did not require the upgrade to sell as a new vehicle

Those old cars are not very safe. That was before they started engineering the frames of cars as crash cages to reduce collision impacts and protect passengers. Many of the seat belts are lap only. Also, no air bags and probably no ABS.

I ride motorcycles on the street. I don’t have any of that stuff either other than ABS. In fact I just got a little heart check this afternoon when a young girl pulled to the right and then did a no look U turn right in front of me. She got an eye full of BMW headlights and my middle finger about 3 feet from her door.

Me too on the motorcycles. I did notice switching helmet color to white and adding reflective yellow to the pannier has made other drivers more aware of me. If I'm riding in heavy traffic, often times I put on the reflective bright neon yellow vest. I'm using d30 armour these days on long trips.

I bet most of us have had an issue with an inattentive driver whether were on a motorcycle or car. It's just way more scary on a motorcycle. You are ahead of the motorcycle riding game on your Beamer, imo. I love mine. Best bike ever.

I just had a wallet lightening at the dealer yesterday. BMW stands for Bring My Wallet but the new brakes were worth every penny. The in-line 6 snarl is worth every penny too.

Last year I was asked if I wanted to buy a 2011 Lincoln Town Car with under 50,000 miles for about $10,000. I said no without even looking but it got me thinking. The more I think about it the better these looks. Body on frame with a v-8. Very reliable. Very comfortable. Very roomy. Decent highway gas millage. Fancy but not so fancy you have to learn anything new.

Does anyone have an opinion on these ?

Tried and true motor/tranny combo. The modular 4.6 is a great motor.

I don't know if you have kids, but in our family we call the cars that are passed down to the grandchildren Grannymobiles. My son-in-law drives a 2006 Toyota Avalon that came from his grandmother. Our kids learned to drive on a 2004 Toyota Camry that we inherited from my husband's mother. These were our Grannymobiles. At our stage of life, when we bought a 2016 Avalon hybrid, we realized that this would probably be our grandkids' Grannymobile. How do you feel about a 2011 Town Car being the Grannymobile you leave to your grandchildren?

Oh, but my 2003 Toyota Avalon XLS is not safe enough for my granddaughter, who turns 15 in February and will get her permit soon after that. I wanted to give her the car but our daughter said it doesn't have a backup camera and not as many airbags as the new cars. They turned me down flat. I thought that would be a good excuse for getting a new car. Why would I give up a perfectly good car that has never had a single issue and still runs so great and is super quiet on the interior, unless I could gift it to someone who would appreciate that car. It does have 192,000 miles on it, but I would bet it will go another 100,000 easy. Rick changes the oil religiously. It also has brand new tires on it. Nope, I am not getting a new car. Maybe when my 7-year-old granddaughter is driving, she will take that car. I have a 12-year-old grandson as well, but he is the brother to the almost 15-year-old granddaughter. I am sure it's not "safe" enough for him, either.

I understand that. In NJ our young drivers are a bit older and our own kids waited till about 18 to get serious about driving. When our youngest went to college in the snowy mountains of Pennsylvania, she did not have a car for the first year. Then we found a used Subaru for her. Then she hit a deer. Then she hit another deer, and that's the deer that did it in. Then we helped her buy a 2017 Subaru with Eyesight and all the bells and whistles Subaru can load on.

We love our old Grannymobiles, but it's true that newer cars have lots more safety features and more protection for the driver and passengers.

Sell the old Avalon and get something nice and new (and safer) for yourself!

The dealer would have fixed it free but it was going to take too long.

You must have a K1600 ? I almost bought one but went with the 1200GS enduro for a bit of off road fun.

That is funny. My sister in law tried to give a Corolla to her grand daughter and was told no thanks. This girl ended up with an older Jeep Grand Wagoner that gets so so gas mileage. We had a 2004 Corolla we loved. Sold that to a friend for her daughter when my husband wanted to upgrade to a hybrid. The Corolla continues rolling on in its new home.

Im thinking that car may be too safe and i am willing to put my life on the line and prove it; just give it to me and you will have reason to get a new car as well as support my research!

My other motorcycle is Big Ugly which is a KLR 650. It's not fast or pretty but it's alot of fun to ride in the hills. Both of mine are enduro. How do you like the Moto Guzzi ? I haven't rode one yet. I heard they were fast.

If I'm remembering right you have a pretty nice ebike Brett. We have a couple of the Lectric xp's foldables with maybe 50 miles on each. They are alot of fun but we seem to only use them on trips.

I wouldn’t say most Guzzi’s are fast. Nice power band for sure but nothing like a sport bike. My 1400 has had a power commander added to eliminate the lean running demanded by Euro regulations. It’s more of a fast cruiser than a sport bike.

I’ve had two Ducatis and a MV Agusta. I’ve got a thing for Italian bikes I guess. I’m eye balling the new Ducati Multistrada V4 and the Harley Pan America. I probably won’t pull the trigger because I’m on the Corvette List and hope to have one by fall of 2022.

While I was thinking about buying this , like only for a few hours, someone bought it. Oh well. I have two things on my to buy list. Another timeshare and a luxury riding vehicle. Maybe a Lex if I can get over the front grill.

I would rather acquire another timeshare off the bargain deals but what I want is very specific so maybe ebay if I'm lucky. I'm in no hurry to get another vehicle but a low mile cheap 2010 or 2011 Towncar might get me going. Upgrades are cheap like the center console , chrome and wheels. I can buy alot of gas for the price difference between a Lex and Towncar, lol.

For those of you who are considering a Lexus...the Toyota Avalon is very comparable and gets fabulous reviews. And they're discontinuing it after 2022. We have the hybrid and it gets about 40 mpg. I recently rode in a friend's Lexus and it felt exactly the same as our Avalon.
