I posted an ad on TUG to see if I could sell my week at the Marriott Kauai Beach Club. I received a message from Gordon Gates at [email address deleted] who claimed to have a buyer. After reading the TUG warnings, I replied that I'd like to confirm he has an actual buyer and that no upfront payment would be required from me. I also asked for some details about their fee structure and commission rates. When I didn't hear back from him, I again emailed that unless I received a reply, I would post this information to the TUG website for the education of others. Needless to say, there has been no response, so seller beware.

Sorry I missed You

Aloha Robert,

Sorry I missed your emails.
I would have loved to work with you.
I hope to work with you in the future.

Thanks TUG for providing a safe place for timeshare owners to network.

I agree that you can get caught in a trap in this industry.
It is full of pitfalls and scams.

Think this one is legit...

I've seen them around a while. Offices I think in Maui... Good though to have an occasional reminder about upfront fees.

I've had contact with them as well, and unless they've changed their spots they are a legitimate reputable company. If they were to contact me saying they had someone interested in buying my Hawai'i timeshare, I would regard that as a legitimate inquiry. (Of course, if they asked for me to pay money upfront, to complete the transaction, I would immediately become suspicious.)

Follow up

Gordon

There's is nothing stopping you from answering the questions I asked in my emails and / or this post.

Robert - I asked Gordon to contact you privately, since we don't allow business to be conducted in the forums, or for companies to promote their services here.

Do you think calling out TimeshareResaleHawaii in public was a smart thing to do? You may have just gotten yourself blackballed. Brokers talk. If you did that to me, I'd probably just direct my client to another property. And, brokers who have several retail outlets, like TRH does, have access to the most number of buyers.

TimeshareResalesHawaii is a very reputable firm with locations all over Hawaii and several on Kauai. They have been in business for over 2 decades and they are licensed in the State of Hawaii and only do Hawaii. Not many of those around. Do you really want to burn your bridge with them?

Before calling a company out, I suggest you simply ask questions on TUG about any consumer experiences people have had. You will get the most honest information that way and you won't tweak over someone who just may be able to help you out. I'd say this is pretty sound advice in an extreme buyer's market.

Like others have stated, timeshareresaleshawaii has been in business for a long time and as far as I know, they do not charge upfront fee. The sales commission and closing cost are pretty hefty but that's no unusual for an outlet such as this. Unless things have changed, I would have no hesitation doing business with them.

Seems like the OP's post was pretty factual. Given how many scams present themselves exactly as described, the OP had every reason to assume it was a scam. Imagine if the OP had started a thread with "I was contacted by a company who claimed to have a buyer for my timeshare." There would be a dozen posts to the thread within minutes saying it was probably a scam and to run the other way. What percentage of the time does this situation present and is actually legit?

I have no dog in this fight, but the OP has been trying to contact this reseller since the beginning of Nov., with no response. That naturally raises a few questions.

With the OP's permission, I provided his email to the reseller, so perhaps they can straighten this out.

Aloha Robert

I did try to answer on this post, but it was taken down. Please email me again. I would like to discuss another potential buyer, and I do not know any other way to reach you.

Thanks Steve

Thanks Steve, I think I remember you. Did you come up to our Front Street office?

No Up Front Fees

I am impressed that you know of us, but like you said 20 years is a long time.
We do not have up front fees.

20 years.

20 years to be exact. Thanks Garnet. I agree no one should pay upfront fees. It breaks my heart to hear when people have been taken in by that type of marketing ploy.
Thanks again!

You do have a dog in the fight.

I appreciate your perspective on this matter. THe more we discusse it the less people will be lured in. You guys at TUG are real watch dogs. This is a great industry, but needs to be watched over or the Wolfs get in!
That how you have a dog in!

It is OK I understand

I appreciate the kind words towards our company, but I do understand. I actually have another potential buyer if this is an OF annual, I can remember.
Robert please email me.
Denise said she emailed me, but I still do not have your email address.
Perhaps we have some kind of interface problem with email servers?

Thanks I have made contact with Robert

Thanks to all. I have made contact with Robert, and we are working on an offer for his week.

Just for those of you who want to get rid of their HI timeshares but did not want to sell it on ebay: Mark at TRH's Maui Office found a buyer for my Sands of Kahana week after listing it with him for three months. It should close soon. The cost of closing is high but I still come out ahead even though I will be taking a loss. At least I get some money instead of selling it on ebay for $1.

Thanks to all. I have made contact with Robert, and we are working on an offer for his week.

Hi Gordon - I'm please that you have contacted Bob, but any further discussion about this transaction should be conducted privately, so as not to appear to be self-promotional.

Thanks!
