12 digit Marriott confirmation number starting with zero?

Recently, I had a rental guest call the front desk at the Westin Nanea to confirm their reservation - they had both the 8-digit Marriott number and the 6-digit Vistana number in-hand. The front desk told him they are using a 12 digit reservation number starting with a zero now? Is there some Marriott number that has 12 digits? Or is this just some kind of misinformation? This is a Vistana home resort reservation - not an exchange or anything weird.

I just made a Marriott vacation club reservation on Thursday and it had the usual 8 digit Marriott reservation number.
 
I have the 8-digit Marriott number as well, I just don't understand the front desks reference to a 12 digit number?
 
I have no idea what they could be talking about.
 
My last MVC reservation I made 2 weeks ago had the usual 8 digit confirmation #.
