12 days till retirement

Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder

This has been going around the internet for awhile, but this seems like a good place to revive it:

I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide my car needs washing.
As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the rubbish bin under the table, and notice that the bin is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the rubbish first.
But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.
I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of coke that I had been drinking.
I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. I see that the coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
As I head toward the kitchen with the coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye: they need to be watered.
I place the coke down on the work surface, and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.
I set the glasses back down on the work top, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone has left it on the kitchen table.
I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the lounge where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.
I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.
Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.
At the end of the day:
• The car isn't washed.
• The bills aren't paid.
• There is a warm can of coke sitting on the work surface.
• The flowers don't have enough water.
• There is still only one check in my checkbook.
• I can't find the TV remote.
• I can't find my glasses and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.
PS. I just remembered, I left the water running......................................

Had the same concerns

I also retired at about your age- 57. I was concerned about my time also.I wrote down 20 places I wanted to go and twenty tasks to do. We have gone the 20 places but now are 72 and have forgotten much so we need to redo some places.
The twenty things to do- I did the first two and have lost the list but somehow I keep busy and go to at least one physical activity each day. Hike,Pickleball,Walk. Also try one other activity-computer club, shows, play gridge, out for lunch or dinner. We live in a Del Webb community and there are 150 clubs, 4 golf courses and much to do. We have ust a few friends here but lots of acquaintances .
I truthfully am not really busy and watch quite a few sports programs and read every day.We live in AZ 5 months,Ca 5 months, hawaii 1 month and usually one trip to a foreign destination. This year Sicily and Tenerife are planned for Sept/October. In between we go on one week timeshare trips. This year in AZ we went to Scottsdale,Sedona, and Aviara Carlsbad. Can't use all the TS weeks as we ave 5 but get two weeks credit for each deposit.

I retired from Verizon (Lineman and Service Tech) in 2003 at age 53. I worked almost 34 years.. I really had no plans to do so, but they made an offer I couldn't refuse....I knew when I retired I wasn't just gonna sit on my butt...53 is quite young....Since then i worked part-time jobs just to keep busy and get a few extra bucks....

I'm settled in w/ my decision after all these years.... And glad I did it...

In October i turn 62 and will collect Social Security.....Yippee

Oh my, so bland. Where is Minnesota or New Hampshire? Get out there and play in the snow.
JK ;)

This is the first class --- add/change the list, but I am single and have not had a job in 25+ years.

No job but I bet you still work your butt off

And thats my advice...if you have time on your hands...fill it...The best job I ever had was in a call center. (not the work...the work sucked) but the people...This place was staffed from Pediatrics to Geriatrics
There were folks working there from age 16-76....something about hanging with kids half your age to keep you young. In fact nothing better to keep you young than smoking dope with a bunch of 20 somethings on your lunch hour
(and you wonder why your reservation gets screwed up when you call your timeshare reservation line)

If not a job, volunteer...There is lots of work that needs done in you community that no one will pay for...Volunteer at an assisted living community, or a day care or a school, or with an environmental group. or get involved with politics. Walk the dogs at an animal shelter; take your dog to visit the hospital or nursing home. Deliver for meals on wheels..

Theres lots to do and lots you can do when you are not doing it for the money

Or you could get a pick up truck and a tool box and go to work for Linda

I love OLLI. Just came from a course called "Finding the Fountain of Youth". Tomorrow it's part of a 6 week course on Frank Sinatra. This semester I am taking courses on history, psychology, music, Italy and art. $85 for 1 or 50 courses. Best thing is I don't have homework, don't have to take tests or notes. Oh yeah, the college is right next door to where I live.

I was really floundering when I took a lay off in 2009 at 62. Part of the problem was the living situation. My son and his family lived with me. While I was working, my DIL pretty much took over the house. Not that I minded since she did the cooking and cleaning. When I was no longer working I felt like I was living in THEIR house. Luckily I had bought a house in an adult retirement community in 2008. I have been here since 9/2010 and love it. I have made several friends which is something I hadn't done when I was working and raising 3 kids. I am a member of a Board Appointed Committee and have gotten involved in a political campaign for the first time in my life. Yikes, what was I thinking. I hate politics. There is much more but I won't bore you. The point is that you have to find things to do and a reason to get up in the morning, get dressed and live a new life! It's not easy.

Talkamotta - give us a countdown - it is getting close! Funtime

Sorry to take this OT, but weren't you on the last tug cruise, Pat? I don't recall anyone posting anything about it ???

I am down to 7 more working days. Im not counting weekends. March 3rd is the date. Go figure.... my rotation for weekends comes up on that weekend and I have to work that Saturday. :wall: Last day to work and I will be working by myself except for testers and outside techs that will call in on trouble tickets.

A week from Thursday I will have the retirement party. We are planning on having it at Bucca de pepo's. My company gives us $750 for food. There will be 2 of us retiring that day, so I think $1500 will pay for a lot of food for lots of people. Its at night so Ive told my friends, co workers and retirees to come and bring thier spouse. :cheer:

I Am Officially Retired

We had a nice retirement party at Bucca dePeppo's Lots of people came. Retired people, friends, family and current coworkers. Got lots of calls and well wishes.

I think alot of the retirees had as much fun as I did. Seeing thier old buds. Telling lies. Good times.

I think I will take it easy next week and then start the lists. My out of state kids have already called and said when am I coming. So thats on the list.

Thanks for all your advice.

Now that you are retired just sit back and relax and have a vacation.

Why not take a two (2) weeks timeshare vacation ?.

Congratulations!

Congrats Talkamotta! Check the last minute board - surely there is a place or two (hopefully warm) that you might want to go to. Ft Lauderdale or Scottsdale for example. Do not worry if you are going alone - there is plenty to do and you can always grab a good book or two besides. Some of the alternate trading sites like DAE and trading places might also have some inexpensive options. You can also pack your exercise quotient in at the same time. Have fun first worry about retirement structure later! Funtime

One year and counting

Good luck on retirement. I will be retiring in June of 2013 after 40 years of teaching and I am looking forward to the change in lifestyle. I will now finally have some time to travel.
