Me too. As a kid , one of the guys I mowed lawns for let me have their old magazines and popular science and popular mechanics were the ones I took. Back then the only magazine I ever bought was Mad.

The internet is destroying the print media.

It did ruin our local print newspaper. I like the digital edition better because we use to have stacks of newspapers in the garage that required a special trip to the recycler or were tossed into the garbage. It just seems like alot of waste. Now we can use all those trees for cardboard boxes instead of newspapers so we can buy things from home. I remember we switched from paper bags to plastic bags at the grocery store to save the trees. It's odd that now we have switched back to paper to save the planet.

Me too! We had dozens of them at the family cottage from the 30's, 40's, 50's & 60's. We had no electricity until 1968 and no TV until July 1969, so reading the magazines provided hours of 'entertainment' and possibly some knowledge. It was fun to look at the ads even 10-20 years later, even better lately. When we were emptying the cottage to get it ready to sell 3 years ago, one of Dad's neighbours asked if he could have them. Saved us putting them in the dumpster!

Purchased a few days before July 16th?
Nope, Dad brought the small black & white up from the rec-room at home for us to watch the rocket launch and lunar landing. He said he was going to take it back home after the mission was over but it ended up staying at the cottage and a new black & white was purchased for the rec-room. We could only get 1 channel, which usually signed off at midnight, but it stayed on the air to cover the landing and walk. We had all the neighbours over to watch as we were the only cottage on our side of the lake with a TV. After the astronauts were safely back on earth the TV was only allowed on after dark, not even on rainy days. We spent most of our time playing in the forest or in the lake all summer from the day school was out until the evening before it started in Sept. Those were the days!

So well said! I've wondered for years about all those boxes. I repurpose or recycle mine. Of course, I don't order that much in the first place.

As much as I love reading the NYTimes online (they do a great job with adding lots of extras which online allows) and even my formerly "local" papers online, this whole loss of magazines really makes me sad. It's happening in the Knitting world, too. Some things translates to online but not everything.. maybe they will make a come back down the road.

It's my fault, I used to buy one to read on the plane, but I haven't flown anywhere in over a decade. ;)
