Will the skiing be ok if a person was to go the weekend before Thanksgiving to Brecekenridge, Vail, etc. . . . . .Looks like the slopes open the 12th, but I wasn't sure about the skiing 19th, 20th. . . .Any comments appreciated.

Colorado Ski Season Advice Needed

Unfortunately, odds are that the skiing will be very weak at that time of year. Probably only 1 or 2 chairlifts open and all machine-made snow (sometimes referred to as the IRD or the WRD, aka White Ribbon of Death or Icy Ribbon of
Death for all the skiers crowded onto a small icy run).
Save your money and go in January or later.

If you are planning to be out here anyway, I wouldn't completely write it off quite yet. But I would not recommend a trip with the sole purpose of skiing that early in the season.
I have skied here pre-Thanksgiving, and it can be ok. There probably will only be a few runs open, but as you probably know, runs on those mountains can be quite long. As for the crowds, I have never experienced them that early in the season -- you would most likely be skiing onto the lift all day long.
The conditions can vary, but I have found that the runs that are actually open to be in good condition. They are getting 1-2" of fresh man-made snow every night, and they groom them every night as well.
You won't get mogul runs or anything advanced that early in the season, but if you are ok with the limitations, you would probably enjoy the skiing.

Week 46 is blue, week 47 is red. That should tell you something. We have seen big snows before Thanksgiving but not regularly enough to count on a lot of skiing, but it's to the benefit of the slopes to have snow for the holiday, so they do manufacture snow and blow it on the runs. It's a weird sight to see, all of that snow and fog on the mountain. The first time I saw the snow-making machines at work, I thought it was a strange cloud.
My boys all ski and snowboard, and they choose to wait until later in the year.
Breck is so beautiful at that time of year, all decorated for the holidays. I would love to be up there right after Thanksgiving myself.

well, I've lived here in Summit County for the last 32 years and some Novembers are more snow than we can handle and some are nothing but manmade snow....
...but either way, I can guarantee that you will have great deals on lift tickets and lodging and no crowds.
Last year we had great snow in the early part of November, lousy snow in December, no snow in January and more snow that we could handle in February, then average in March and then lots for April closing. next year could be completely opposite...we never know.

If you are in Summit County try Keystone or Araphoe
If you are staying in Breckenridge, Keystone or Araphoe often have better early snow then Breck - but it is still like playing poker. They will defintely have snow at Araphoe - the elevation is so much higher, on the way to Loveland Pass. But, it is a different type of ski experience then Breck. It all depends on what you want. We go Thanksgiving - we have a condo in Keystone and we ski where the snow is. It may be Copper, or Breck but it is often Keystone, my husband loves the night skiing.
One thing for sure, the days before the Thursday of Thanksgiving - NO LIFT LINES, this is often priceless!
