Due to the recent egg recall and salmonella outbreak, has anyone returned their eggs to the store? We aren't affected here, as far as is known so far. Though I take the eggs I buy out of the store carton and throw it away so I have no idea what code is on them anyway. If they post the codes they'll accept, I'll just pitch the ones I have. It's only a buck +- a few cents.

IMO, the producer in Iowa is likely to find out how good their liability insurance is.

Sad...There should NOT be such large outbreaks of Salmonella in the US. It is getting scarry. Young children and the elderly can become very ill.

What can we do to stop this???

Be it fruit, salads, meat now eggs...not good.

we recently bought eggs for the first time in months. Literally one day before the news release. I called Eggland's Best, eggbeaters (ConAgra), and Cracker Barrel, where we stopped for breakfast on our latest road trip a few days ago. None are effected by the recall.

Invest 90 minutes and watch "Food Inc." (documentary movie). It may raise as many questions as it provides answers, but it does provide some pretty startling commentary on our food supply, and does suggest some things that we can do to start changing things back to a safer system.

It's normally said that we in the UK follow the US. In this instance we were years ahead. Have a look at this

Cooking kills Salmonella - you just have to be sure your eggs are cooked all the way through and aren't runny. It is actually pretty common to find Salmonella in eggs & poultry - that's why you aren't supposed to eat chicken rare.

Plenty coming back

In the store I work at in California many customers are panicked and have brought the eggs back (we haven't seen any yet that fit the recall). We are taking back any they bring to make them happy. We keep getting more notices of new recalls but so far they have all been the same for our brand.
New recalls went out today for several other companies. Most of the larger chain stores get their eggs from a few distributors(they just put our name on the label).

We actually had an interesting conversation with the guy cooking breakfasts when we were in Hawaii about 5 years ago. He said Brits were complaining about their eggs being overcooked i.e. not runny. Practice in the UK has always been for the white to be fully set but the yolk still runny. I've survived that for nearly 60 years without any obvious problems and have no plans to change now. Even during the salmonella 'scare' here some years ago we ate them cooked as we alway have.

I would hope that any stores that handle those affected eggs would have pulled them and posted they had done so. I would also appreciate other stores posting that their eggs are NOT among those that have been recalled.

After the fact

It is past the date the eggs are to be sold already. They better not still have them out for sale.

That is not true. The recall date was extended to include eggs "produced" as of August 17th, not expired by August 17th.

From the looks of this story, it appears that the supplier has been in violation one too many times (or better, probably 10 too many times!) http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,599982,00.html

Looks to me like a good old fashioned boycott is in order.

We went to the farmer's market yesterday and there was a young man there with beautiful brown eggs. To reassure customers, he also brought along a cage with a couple of his workers in it. He had a "Meet Your Chickens" sign on it. It was hilarious. Our fried eggs this a.m. had the most glorious yellow yolks.... He was just about sold out at 9:30 a.m., so getting to meet your chickens must be an effective marketing ploy. I fell for it! :)

This May my husband bought two baby chicks that are now hopefully only a few months away from making us our breakfast.

I always buy my eggs from people I know - in fact there are three people where I work who sell eggs, so I haven't bought them from a grocery store in years.

I have been buying Eggland's Best. With the coupons from magazines they are not much more than the other brands. Today I bought Kroger brand [like Eggbeaters] which are processed and should not carry Salmonella.

Wow!

This May my husband bought two baby chicks that are now hopefully only a few months away from making us our breakfast.

Are they currently attending cooking school? That's some talented chickens if they can "make breakfast". Will they also prepare pancakes? (I would love to see them flip pancakes -- please take some video...;)

I would definitely say that those chickens will be making breakfast. The person flipping the pancakes is cooking breakfast.

C'mon now, smile...

I was just joking around --- not criticizing grammar; and I still want to see a chicken flipping pancakes...:D
