southwestern style, tex mex music/[Party - merged]

L

I need some suggestions for some southwestern style, tex mex music. We are having a bbq /southwestern style party in a couple weeks. I am not a country music fan, I am thinking more along the line of Los Lonely Boys, Santana, and well, I draw a blank after that.

Any suggestions for my playlist?

Texas Tornadoes (sort of the TexMex supergroup with Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers (Sahm's bandmate in the groundbreaking Sir Douglas Quintet), Freddy Fender, and Flaco Jimenez).

Joe King Carrasco

Los Lobos

To really change things up, how about some Andre Segovia.

Some other thoughts - not as pure "Tex Mex" but with some southwestern flavor:

Alejandro Escovedo. Brother of Pete Escovedo and uncle to Sheila E. Mostly a roots rocker with some southwestern leanings.

Calexico

If you were to head that direction, I think Rodrigo y Gabriela would work well.

I love RyG - probably the best artists out there doing modern flamenco. Here's a video of RyG covering Metallica's "Orion". And they do a version of "Stairway to Heaven" to make Jimmy Page hang up his guitar. And here's a clip from when they were on Letterman.

*******

Could also do the soundtrack to "Desperado", though that isn't entirely southwestern (with selections from Dire Straits and Link Wray)

There is some stuff by Paco DeLucia, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola (solo or in various combinations) that would work also, but you'd have to pick through it.

Do you have any Mexican stores near you? We have lots of them run by immigrants. Many of them sell CDs of what is popular to their customers. You may even find a few CDs for sale at a Mexican restaurant.

Showing my age

Linda Ronstadt has an album of spanish songs that is fabulous, Canciones di mi padre. It is easy listening, but definitely Mexican.

I also like Selena.

Pedro Fernandez, Aaron y su groupo ilusion (with horns) - fairly traditional "mexican" sound.

For more of a salsa sound: Grupo Los Duenos, Grupo Maravilla,

For a jazzier/bluesier sound: Electrificacao,

More popular - Enrique Iglesias.

Hip hop Latino - Fuego.

It just depends on what you like. There is a tremendous variety in Latin/Mexican music.

Except for Linda Rondstadt, Selena and Enrique Iglesias, this information came from two of my clients who were happy to share what they enjoy listening to.

My perception of TexMex is that it is a style of rock, largely associated with San Antonio and south Texas, that incorporates some Hispanic influences into a rock format, and often incorporates Spanglish into the lyrics. I think that little, if any, of the music you find in those types of stores will be "TexMex". In my observations, TexMex appeals almost exclusively to an Anglo audience, with only a smattering appeal to Latinos.

The music that I have seen in los mercados is generally Tejano, salsa, Latin rap/hip-hop, popular vocal in styles such as Julio Iglesias and Shakira , and some latin rock and blues.

All of those are quite different stylings from what I perceive the OP is looking for. I can't imagine playing any of those styles of music at a venue as described unless the attendees included a substantial Mexican and Central American background.

You sure know more about music than I do! Most of it sounds the same to me. Yes, I can differentiate between Shakira and mariachi but that's about it.

I still remember your link to "Come Thou Font of Every Blessing." But I don't think the OP is looking for that, either. Not even if it was sung in Spanglish. ;)

bumping my post to see if I can get a few more suggestions before I make my playlist!:D

If you want to go a bit Texas bluesy, you could add some Stevie Ray Vaughan.

check out the Old 97s

The Old 97s make great, current countrified rock. If you're just pulling a few songs to put on a mix, check out these favorites:

W. Texas Teardrops
Murder (or a Heart Attack)
Barrier Reef
Timebomb
Oppenheimer
The Streets of Where I'm From
My Sweet Blue-Eyed Darling

I could go on and on...

I've seen them live twice and they are great fun.

Being from Florida, I'd like to add Jimmy Buffett's "Desparation Samba" (Halloween in Tijuana).

Tex Mex party plans are underway!

I have just under 48 hours to pull everything off.

I have 6 lbs of bbq'd briskette cooking in the slow cooker for pulled beef sandwiches, 3 slabs of ribs slow cooking on the grill (3 more to cook tomorrow), 2 doz ears of corn to shuck, my playlist set to go (only 2 hours and 9 minutes of songs though, wish I had found more that I liked), and 30-35 ppl set to arrive Saturday afternoon!

Thanks to everyone for helping me with slow cook rib assistance, setting up my playlist, and help with my nano!
