I saw a big game bird today, standing under a pickup truck in Sunrise -- near Hollywood Blvd.

It was (much) bigger than a Gambel's quail, but it looked very quail-like. Spotty gray feathers. Stood VERY upright, at least 24". At least three pounds in weight. Black feet. Looked like a hen. Any ideas? (Sorry, no camera. We were out yardsailing.)

It wasn't a pea hen. It was taller than a chicken, but thinner, about the same mass.

The 'at least 24" threw me off---ideas escape me at that point. And my hubby who is very familiar with the flora and fauna is out for the week. Did it have a long neck like a crane?

No, I said "spotted gray feathers" and "24 inches tall."

That bird is yellow and a titch taller than 24".

Well, I can't say I didn't try.

I don't really know what bird you are describing. All I got are more bad jokes I will keep to myself. I hope you find that bird you are looking for. :)

No, I know roadrunners when I see them -- and I see them a lot.

This was much bigger. Looked like a quail, but bigger than the normal quails we have in our yard.

Edit -- No, it wasn't a crane. The build is all wrong. Big, big quail.

Did it look like this?

I think this is a roadrunner and we saw it in Death Valley a few months ago.

Edit: I must have been posting this while you were responding that it wasn't a roadrunner. Sorry about that.
