Marriott Rule Changes

We have own 3 weeks with Marriott (Ocean Pointe, KoLina, OceanWatch). The first 2 were bought from Marriott, the last resale. Over the 15 years that we have owned, each Owner's Forum yields half truths and varying information. However, as we just bought in May via resale, I have a question: upon contacting Marriott first about purchasing a resale (price too high), I was told that owner rules would be changing with respect to priority at home resorts. I have questioned our Marriott Representative about the increased number of people who rent out their units and how, we as owners, cannot get an exchange thru interval. She too also said that this may change as exchanges are almost non existent this year. Interval confirmed this. Both base this on the bad economy.

Has anyone received additional information? I do not trust sales pitches, but a number of our fellow Marriott owners have heard the same information.

Bonus Weeks

If that was the case, it looks like Interval would be floating a bonus week certificate in front of me to encourage me to deposit... I'm about to book for next summer and haven't received any bonus week (what some call AC's) offers at all.

I've just reserved my MOW, and am hoping for an AC. I thought you had to have made a reservation before they would offer you an AC? New at this. I could be wrong.

We have gotten several exchanges in the past few months, some with units we bought from Marriott, some resale. We just booked a week for July 4th with an AC. Nothing has changed yet!

Last year

Last year there was some change at Interval where they sent you a "code" on a post card (or some kind of mailing) that you had to electronically enter to receive you AC. I never saw one hit my mailbox (they had always offered me an AC for Oceanwatch in the past).

I've been looking for that post card but haven't seen one yet.

In the meantime, I just went to "reserve" my Oceanwatch for next June and found no availability... it's never been gone this fast before!!!!

I guess I need to log in at 9am next week!

Agree

When we booked at Ocean Pointe in March for next year, I was on at 9am and had to take a Friday opening because that was all that was open! Very disturbing that all goes so fast!
What is going on?

If you go to deposit your week with II, when you get to the last screen before depositing your week there should be a box which asks for the code from the postcard.

If the box is there then the week does qualify for an AC. If you don't have the code you can likely call II ans ask.

If there is no box asking for the code, then the week doesn't qualify for an AC.

I called yesterday at 4:30p to ask a question and ended up reserving my week then. We check in June 11 (Saturday). When I called they had Friday, Saturday and Sunday check-ins available. They must have gone fast!

Just an FYI, if you are looking online and it shows no availability, they may still have it when you call owners services. When I looked online it showed no dates being available but then called owners services and they had friday, saturday, and sunday check in for the first week of June. She said what is on the computer an the inventory they have at owners services are different. I think they are having a glitch on the online reservation tool, but that is not confirmed.

Good luck,
RP

Although only time will tell if this is "salesman" hype, but could the "rule" changes be related to what is being touted as a new point system. A friend and fellow owner was told by a sales rep that mid June Marriott will no longer being selling deeded weeks. Their inventory will be sold under a point system only. If this is not salesman hype could it change how things are done? :ponder:  :ponder:

I called at 9:00a on Thursday to reserve a Saturday check-in and went online while waiting on hold. No availability online, but had no trouble reserving on the phone.

I haven't heard about change in priority but I questioned MVCI recently about the numerous unreserved weeks on more than one of our timeshares. They told me many people are behind in their maintenance fees, which means they can't reserve. Therefore they can't rent either. I asked what happens to those units and was told Marriott rents them out.

So, Marriott wins big time since they charge a huge rental fee, more than any maintenance fee, and we who are trying to exchange, lose, as there is less availability.

They also confirmed that there would be a points system and some charge to convert, and that they only expected 20-25% of current owners to convert. That should leave plenty of exchanging according to them...

I suspect the economy and unpaid maintenance fees will mess with trading availability on currently existing TSs more so than the new system. But time will tell.
