We plan to be on Oahu for few days, then do interisland hops somewhat like this:

2 travelers, multi-city (36 days, 35 nights) More flight detailsTotal airfare, taxes and fees: $ 674.40

Sun, Mar 28 Depart: 5:22 am Honolulu/Oahu, HI (HNL) Hawaiian Airlines 106

Arrive: 5:58 am Kahului/Maui, HI (OGG)

Sun, Apr 11 Depart: 7:43 am Kahului/Maui, HI (OGG) Hawaiian Airlines 115
1 stop
Arrive: 9:26 am Kauai Island, HI (LIH) Hawaiian Airlines 303

Sun, Apr 25 Depart: 7:00 pm Kauai Island, HI (LIH) Hawaiian Airlines 554
1 stop
Arrive: 8:43 pm Kona/Big Island, HI (KOA) Hawaiian Airlines 398

Sun, May 2 Depart: 7:01 am Kona/Big Island, HI (KOA) Hawaiian Airlines 217

Arrive: 7:43 am Honolulu/Oahu, HI (HNL)

That is four flights with Hawaiian Airlines resulting in a round trip. Questions:

1) Will bag fees apply for each flight? I think, YES.

2) Are there better ways of hopping to all islands? Like, do you know of less expensive ways?

3) How best to book rental cars to cover all islands? Does anyone know a rental company that works with you to minimize cost for 36 days of rental? I guestimate an extra $1000 for the individual island rentals.

There are not - there are no ferries or other ways to island hop. GO airlines is a alternative, but some people have had bad experiences with them.

Did you book this as all one itinerary booked at the same time or separate itineraries? Booking it as one itinerary should save you some money on baggage fees.

Also - you don't need a lot of clothes in Hawaii. It's hot and humid and very, very causal and you probably have a w/d in you TS units. You should easily be able to get by with one bag each.

This is what we take to Hawaii

This sounds like and amazing trip! Be sure you buy some guide books and do some planning before you go.

I like the Hawaii Revealed books, and for Maui I like Driving and Discovering Maui and Molokai.

How do we avoid paying bag fees with each check-in?

Where best to purchase minimal wear? ;) We could come expecting to please ourselves and throw away and purchase new as we go. Just kidding of course!!

I know as we buy more, we carry more to the next island if we don't get rid of anything.

Has anyone shipped bags from resort to resort rather than carry them through check-in?

We plan to touch down at various cities before we return home. Warm weather clothing will be shipped accordingly so as not to carry more than necessary on the island flights.

Shipping to Hawaii is very expensive, I don't think you can ship it for less than your baggage fees.

Have you already made your airline reservation? Baggage fees may be less if you put all your flights on one reservation, booked at one time. You can do that on the Hawaiian air website - you can make a multi-leg reservation.

Wonderful packing tips Denise. Thanks. We also travel with very little when we do our Orlando trips, often only bringing 2 pair of shorts each. And I do plan on purchasing a few pair when we are there. :D

I will check into the travel book.

Man, you really put together an amazing hawaii adventure! Looks like we will be in Maui at the same time, so have to plan on a get together. Cindy (and Rick) will also be there that week. Anyone else in Maui starting April 16?

Cindi, it would seem y'all and us'ins are out of sync. Wyoming, Florida and now Hawaii.

We really wish to meet all TS4MS and TUG folk while hopping the islands. Maybe a few pool parties are in order.

I want to meet up with Emmy and Peter. And I'm afraid the whales will have departed if we arrive later than the end of March.

Maybe we'll have to stay on Maui for a whole month. . . Arriving on 28 March and leaving on 25 April. I'll have to look for more resorts.

Was thinking of going to Kauai on Apr 11 till the 25th and get over to Kona/Big Island. Tony and Pat should be there. If we stay on Maui for your week, I suppose we could do Kona first before going to Kauai.

Was anticipating heading to west coast via Honolulu on 2 May. Could change that.

If I knew others itineraries, we could try to shuffle things a bit to coincide more.

I'm thinking, "don't fret about whales on Maui as they may be near Kona yet the last of April. Or they may be off Oregon Coast while up there. ?????

Looking forward to meeting my Foxrun buddy! We are very excited to stay at the Westin for the first time. We have other friends joining us, although not in our unit. Mom is the only one traveling with us, so she can have her own private little apartment.

I notice you say you have .... "Resorts: Way too many! Selling some, giving some away, keeping the best...."

We might need to borrow or swap something to stretch our Maui stay to a month!!! We have several RCI deposits and a few Wyndham points, but you know how RCI is about availability. :wall:

Luggage fees

You can't get away from luggage fees unless you just do a carry on. And you can't take liquids or gels on a carry on. You get cheaper fees if you check in on line within 24 hours of your departure. $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second on the overseas flight. $10 for the first and $17 for second on an interisland flight. They cost more if you pay at the counter.
On our recent trip, we had one suitcase for both of us, one cooler with all of our meat for multiple dinners on the lanai, and one carryon each to cover two weeks on Maui. We used the W/D in the unit several tiems during the two weeks, and I think we still brought too many clothes.

Now, that's interesting.
Thanks.
