Can you exchange marriott weeks for hotel stays?

Hello everyone,

I currently owned 7000 points at Hilton and I am thinking about adding on a Marriott timeshare. I was wondering if you could stay at Marriott hotels with your timeshare week like you can with hilton. Does anyone know how the conversion is done? For example, 7000 HGVC points = 7000 x 25 = 175000 Hilton honors points. While I don't do this often, it nice to know that I can as a backup in case I don't used my points.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you purchase direct through Marriott, you will have the option of exchanging your week for Marriott points. The amount of points will be told to you when you buy. Many people will tell you its not worth it to make this exchange. Generally, you are looking at 100k points plus or minus 25k, depending on what you buy.

Many people will also tell you that since the feature of exchanging for points is the only difference between buying direct and buying resale, again, it is not worth it.

And to add a little bit of info, the "not worth it" attitude is based on:

  • The resales price of the timeshare might be 10% to 50% of (not "off") the selling price by Marriott
  • It is likely that a husband/wife team could purchase that amount of points (that they could "exchange" their Marriott week) for very close to the Maintenance Fee price.

If you purchase directly from Marriott you can exchange your timeshare week for points every other year. Some of the older resorts allow you to trade for points every year but the norm is every other year. The # of points that you get for trading your week for points depends primarily of the season that you own.

OP, since the only 'official' way to use deeded/rtu MVCI weeks for hotel stays is to, as a developer-only owner, surrender them annually or bi-annually to MVCI for 'points', which are then used to make award hotel reservations at what I consider to be a disadvantageous rate. I own a couple of developer intervals and I haven't surrendered them in the six years I've owned them. I'd suggest waiting until MVCI/Marriott announces their new points system before making a decision. Those intervals aren't going anywhere.

I was going to post something about that too, but it is just a rumor at this point. It has been a rumor to some level since I've owned MVCI weeks, which has now been 7+ years. So to the OP, don't make a purchase assuming Marriott will move to a points-based system.

Talking to the sales manager at St. Kitts earlier this month he confirmed that Marriott is going to a points based system this year. He said they hope to annoounce the new program in June if they can nail everything down by then

Yes, the sales manager said it is coming soon.
I assume this was in casual conversation and not part of some "and resales will not be part of this program" pitch.

As others have said, Marriott has been going to a points based/internal trade system for every year I known about Marriott's.

Unfortunately, the only people who seem to know anything about it are sales reps trying to sell you.

And we know that is the best source of information. :)
