Kitchen appliances--is stainless still considered top of the line?

Several of my kitchen appliances need repairs, so I have decided to replace them all. My kitchen is small, white cabinets and walls, black granite counter tops and oven. Some touches of stainless and a red chili ristra.

I am trying to decide between black and stainless steel for a new refrigerator, compactor, dishwasher, stove top and hood. I think either would be ok, but stainless has been around a long time. I am not up on current decorating trends. Anyone have any idea whether stainless or black is "newer" or more fashionable in kitchen appliances?

Thanks,

Diane

In any given brand/line the guts are exactly the same in both so it really is just cosmetic. While stainless has been the buzz for the past 4-5 years black (and white still) are making a comeback as trends do change and "stainless" really isn't as far too many find out too late. Either one will work well so it's what you prefer that should make your decision for you. Or find out which brand it was on HGTV a few weeks ago that had BOTH colors on reversible panels (as most dishwashers do but not as common for other appliances) so you can change the color as the trends shift. Prevents color obsolescence. Too bad they didn't have that for pink bath fixtures...

Unless you are planning on selling your house soon, buy what you like best--what makes you happy. If you are planning on selling, ask a realtor for advice as they know what sells and what doesn't.

Personally, I don't like stainless as it is hard to keep it looking good. So, I bought a black dishwasher and my friend gasped that I could do such a thing as she thinks black is hard to keep looking good. To each her own.

I agree with Rose -- buy what you like best. We have all black right now, but I really like the black / stainless combo look as well.

We completed a kitchen remodel last summer.

We went back and forth between stainless and black. I really was apprehensive out trying to keep stainless clean and nice looking, though I preferred the look. I clean the appliances every two weeks whether they need it or not, and I was just thinking this past Wednesday when I was wiping them down that I was so glad that we opted for the stainless steel. Actually, I feel like I was doing more wiping down when I had white appliances. There are four of us, including two 15-year-old boys. We have a refrigerator, oven/microwave combination, dishwasher and trash compactor. They rarely even need the wipe-down every two weeks. I love them!!

The only thing I don't like about stainless is that unless you buy them at the same time from the same manufacturer it seems difficult to have them match. I think some of them are actually a stainless finish vs actual stainless.

Definitely buy what you want if you're staying in the house for awhile. Honestly, I moved into a house with a stainless fridge and d/w. Stove and microwave are black. I will never ever ever in my life buy stainless. lol. But that's me. I don't use the d/w for washing, but for drying. Any water spots, all but "stain" the front. With any other color, a swipe with a paper towel would be good enough.

I also hate that nothing STICKS to the fridge...as in magnets. But yes, I'm one of those ppl that love to put up magnets. lol.

Lastly, for everyone who has stainless steel, what do you clean it with? We've tried the mitts, the towels, the sprays, and nothing works. All I get are MORE streaks. Sigh. Any sugg's would be great. PM me if you don't want to hijack (and sorry for hijacking).

The product I tried worked for us and I love it!

I had to try several products before I found the right ones that worked for us for the granite countertops and the glass cooktop stove.

But I saw this at World Market. Sprayaway Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish (Oil-based Cleans, Polishes, Preserves and Protects). 1-866-836-8855

Do a search also because there are several threads on appliances and specifically Stainless Steel and cleaning it. Reading some of them really made we think that I would be jumping off a cliff if I chose Stainless Steel, but as I said, I'm loving it!!!!!! Good luck!

I have good results using Lysol Kitchen cleaner, a sponge, and a rag. I spray the cleaner, somewhat liberally, wipe it with the wet sponge, then dry it with the rag. The dryer the rag and the longer I rub, the better the results.

Hope this helps!

I have white cabinets, granite counter tops and stainless appliances in my kitchen. It is not what I would have chosen, but it came with the house and I have learned to love everything except the white cupboards. I love the look of the stainless appliances.

Some of the stainless steel appliances now have a coating of some sort (?plastic) so that they are less likely to smudge and are easier to clean.

Where we live the stainless is still the most popular but unless you are planning to sell I would get what you like. We have stainless and like it very much but some people don't like that look and have black or white appliances. We had white appliances in the past and the white plastic does turn a sickly yellow over time so I would definitely avoid that.

I would think that SS would complement your black countertops, nicely, since they are mostly trimmed in black. Our fridge is some kind of finish that looks like stainless, but I couldn't bring mysef to have a fridge I couldn't stick magnets on.. LOL!..so we opted for the other. I have no problem at all with spotting. As someone else said, white was a big problem, and I think spotting on black is worse than SS. Buy what you love. SS seems to run a bit more in price, but we find it worth it.

We've been told 'stainless' if you're going to sell

I agree - get what you want. I don't like the stainless steel either - but that's what we're going to put in a investment house we're going to be selling. Had a house stager in for advice and she said 'NOT WHITE!'. She said to go with stainless or a stainless/black combination. Also said 'had to' have a counter depth fridge. Those run about $400 more than a 'regular' stainless steel fridge. Gulp. Will probably rent the fridge and stove to show the house (entire house will be staged) rather than buy 'em. Will buy the microwave and dishwasher because those a built in.

Our housekeeper, who cleans a large variety of houses, said she would never get stainless due to upkeep--every little fingerprint shows up. However, a previous poster mentioned now they are putting some type of topcoat on the stainless that prevents that, so may be worth checking out.

Mine are all white, and I'm very happy with them.
