I've had the hiccups for almost 12 hours now, anybody have a remedy? I tried a gas relief pill, lots of water, holding my breath, etc.

sounds miserable -- hope they're gone soon. what usually works for me is a combo -- exhale, take a large drink of water and swallow it slowly while holding your breath as long as you can, then hopefully you will burp. May have to try it a few times. Maybe someone will send you a message that all your MFs have tripled, and that will scare them out of you!

A heaping teaspoon of white granulated sugar - swallow it quickly. And if it doesn't work the first time, follow it right away with a second spoonful. No kidding, this almost always works for me, and is the only remedy that does. (Not to mention, guilt-free sweets!)

Funny, this is really close to what has always worked for me, but in reverse. I get a BIG cold glass of water and take in the fullest breath you can and hold it as long as you can, then as you have to exhale, begin drinking water, in as big a gulp you can, in between exhales. This got me through college and back to the table....

Alternative, is simply to try to hold your breath as long as you can, without letting yourself pass out.

Try these at your own risk, but they consistently work for me (still)

Stand at the sink and with a large glass of water. Drink from the far side of the glass (some even encourage plugging your nose while doing this).

None of the "tricks" ever work for me. Since hiccups are really your diaphragm in spasm, the best thing that works for me is concentrating on controlling your breathing. Relax and try to get into a meditative state, and slowly breath in and out. Take long slow inhales, counting the seconds, and try to take just as long to exhale. The point is to get your diaphragm back under control.

Holding my breath has always worked for me.

I've read where breathing into and out of a paper bag works but I never tried it. Both methods cause a slight increase in carbon dioxide so I guess that is what does it. Good luck.

Wonka---it has been a LOOONNNNGGG time---
have you gotten rid of them??!!

If so, what worked?

Pat

This is the one that has always worked for me.

Drink a glass of water upside down. It works for me, but you cannot turn the glass of water upside down, you have to be the one that is upside down.

Call your doctor

Hiccups can be very unpleasant and persistent. The specific drug used to stop them is Thorazine which relaxes the diaphragm. Yes it is also an anti-psychotic but you would use low dose for a very short time and only if the hiccups persist and are ruining your life, keeping you from sleeping.

Drink a full glass of water with a straw while holding your ears shut! Also, sometimes just saying the word FISH works. Don't know why!?!

Well, I've tried most of the suggestions including peanut butter. I still had the hiccups most of the day today, but they've subsided some this evening (although I just had another hiccup session while typing this).

My Dad, a doctor, would use a clean cloth napkin (or the like) and pull on my tongue. It worked every time. Good luck.

Try about 6 to 10 shots of good 100 Percent Agave Tequila
If it doesnt stop it you will probably want to go to sleep
:hysterical:

On a serious note drinking water out of the opposite side of a glass has worked for me in the past
Hope you get rid of them

I don't usually have them for very long, but if they hang on, I drink a shot of sweet liqueur (sweet sherry or Frangelico or whatever sweet alcohol you have, but nothing coffee-based like Kahlua), warmed in the microwave. That usually does it, after a few more hiccups. The combination of the sweetness and the alcohol seems to work.

Take a deep breath ~ hold. Swallow three times ~ the muscles you use to do this, will break the cycle. Always works for me! Good Luck!!

*Home Remedy*

Make a mixture by adding 2 tsp of common salt in a cup of plain yogurt and eat it slowly. This is a very effective home remedy for hiccups. :)

Are they gone yet? Geeeeez, how horrible. I really hope one of the great suggestion listed above worked.

To the OP, did any of these work?

I'm also a drink from the opposite side of a glass of water - standing over the bathtub and turning as upside down as you can. Then slowly try to take a shallow breathe, not a big gulp of air.

They're gone...thanks for the help.
