Air in Car Tires

I was at my dealer today to have my tires checked on my new car. It has a sensor that lites up on the dash when there is a tire problem. Well there was no real problem just needed a little air in one tire. Anyways he told me they are putting nitrogen in tires now that is suppose to give you better mileage and so on. Of course they want 49.99 for this service. Has anyone tried this? Is it worth the money?

I had the low tire inflation dash light come on in my Mazda MX-5 about 3 months ago. I checked the tires and put a little air in the one that registered lowest. No problems since. Would I pay $49.99 for nitrogen? No way.

Just check your tire pressure monthly and save your money.

I have heard of this being done but I would never do this because just like air you have to check you tires regularly and if you have nitrogen in it that means that you will have to take it some where and have them put the nitrogen in your tires, This can get costly I would just suggest the plain old air. Its lots less expensive and if I am not mistaken the difference in mileage is not that much

Costco & nitrogen in tires

If you want to try the nitrogen thing, consider getting your next set of Michelins or Goodyears at Costco. They should save you some bucks (especially when the go on sale every other month or so).

Nitrogen or air. I mix and match. There is no problem with adding air to a nitrogen filled tire. NO WAY for $49.95. I wouldn't pay $1.00 extra.

Plain ol' air is 80% nitrogen anyway. Don't spend extra.

Good point. I wasn't planning to. It's just the first time I had heard of that.

What about air....you have to pay to even get air now at gas stations.

Nitrogen

I've had my car for about two years. I got new tires recently and was told the nitrogen would help maintain a more even pressure in them (and thus make them wear better). I was told I could add plain air anytime. It was only $5 a tire which after you lay out close to $700 for tires, balancing, alignment, etc seemed like a bargin.

However...since filling the tires up with nitrogen...my light has come on 3 or 4 times. Usually right after a long road trip (me driving 200 + miles) or hubby driving shorter distance (but much more aggressively ) I ***think*** the light comes on now when the tires get hot (and thus the gas expands) since when I check them they are fine so I just press the reset button.

The dealer in my area does this service free.Iit seems to work keeping air pressure level but I don't think I would pay for it.

Most of the time you can just ask them to turn on the machine, and they will do it for free.

Get yourself a small portable compressor.

Go to your local auto supply store and get a small compressor for about $25. Next time you need new tires have them put in the nitrogen.

DH decided to go with the nitrogen when we had our car serviced. They told us we would get better gas mileage and wouldn't have to check the tires as much. Worked fine...until the one tire kept getting low. When I called to get it fixed and refilled I was told their nitrogen machine was down, and to go somewhere close to have the tire repaired and filled with air. Their machine is still down. I do think we got better gas mileage, but now I can't find anywhere close that has a nitrogen machine :annoyed: Is it worth it? At this point I say no.
