How do you know if your tv is a sdtv, thus not needing a convertor box? What year did they start making them?

Little Switch On The Back For Selecting Digital Or Analog Reception ?

How do you know if your tv is a sdtv, thus not needing a convertor box?
We saw a conventional CRT-style TV set at Wal*Mart last year that was labeled SDTV -- standard definition ditigal television. It was not flat-screen & not high-definition -- just a plain-vanilla 27-inch color TV that won't go obsolete next year.

If the set were digital only, it wouldn't work till next February when broadcast TV goes all-ditigal. So in order for it to receive anything between now & then, it would need to have a little switch on the back or a remote control menu selection for setting it to analog reception now & digital reception in February 2009.

If yours is like that, you should be good to go come February 2009. If you're not sure, maybe you can look it up on the Internet by model number & find out what's what.

Good luck.

Agreed on everything that Alan said. I will just add that if you have the TV plugged into cable, in any way, it will continue to work after Feb.

I don't think it needs to have a switch. There's no switch for tuning to analog OTA and analog cable channels. It just has to be able to tune to and decode the OTA digital channels and sub-channels, in addition to being able to receive the current set of analog channels.

To the OP: If you know the make and model of your TV and how you're receiving your tv signal, we might be able to answer your question.

Actually an "all digital" set would work fine now if you're located near any major metropolitan area, as most local stations are broadcasting digital signals along with the analog ones which will be discontinued in Feb. It just wouldn't be able to receive the analog broadcasts.
