Online divorcee jailed after killing virtual hubby

Their avatars got married. His avatar divorced hers. She got her revenge by hacking his account and killing his avatar. It all happened in cyberspace. Shouldn't the cybercops be dealing with this??

TOKYO -- A 43-year-old Japanese woman whose sudden divorce in a virtual game world made her so angry that she killed her online husband's digital persona has been arrested on suspicion of hacking, police said Thursday.

The woman, who is jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his identification and password to log onto popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in mid-May, a police official in northern Sapporo said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

The woman had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.

I think it would be very therapeutic to have a virtual husband to kill once in awhile!

Believe it or not, this is the virtual world of Maple Story:

Let me see, my DH is 6'3" so I'm going to say he's most resembles one of the winged ape critters or maybe the white boulder looking thing.

Ladies - who would you pick for your virtual husband in Maple Story? :D

I'll admit, I'm having enough of a problem grasping Scrabble, Boggle, Mobwars etc. on Facebook, but her problem is that she "actually" hacked into her ex's account to do what she did. The "virtual" murder isn't her problem, its the "actual" hacking. To your point, there has to be bigger things for the authorities to worry about. If the guy hadn't been a virtual scumbag, she never would have virtually done what she did.

Isn't it all just a Matrix anyway???

Well, I'm not sure what she did would count as "hacking" here in the US -- I think he had told her his password, or gave her enough back-up information ("secret question" type stuff) to get into his account.

Real-world punishment strikes me as excessive. I think they should have her avatar go to jail in "Maple World."
