There was an article today in our local South Florida Sun-Sentinel about digitizing ones personal CD collection using a Bravo SE.

What is the Bravo SE?
It's a gadget that duplicates CD's. It can also rip (copy) their data to a computer.

How much does it cost?
A fully-functional Bravo SE starts at $1500. However, you can rent one that only rips for $299 per week.

What does the rental program include?
They send you the duplicator, RTRip Software and instructions. The price includes round-trip shipping.

How does it work?
Just stack your CDs - up to 20 at a time - in the machine and press a button to upload the files on your computer. It saves the songs and song information to your hard drive.

What do I need: You'll need a PC running Windows XP or Vista and an Internet Connection.

you can get free "ripper" programs and free CD copy software, why pay $1,500 or even $300 ? I suppose if you had a CD collection in the thousands it would save time but ...

It doesn't specify the format it will rip in (just default) so you could rip everything in MP3 which would result in lost sound quality due to compression.

And it says the following:

"An international online database called CDDB is used to identify the CD to be ripped. CDs not found in the CDDB database will be skipped. An on screen log is created to help identify which CDs are skipped. If multiple CDDB entries are found for a CD which would normally require you to choose the correct entry, PTRip will automatically choose the first entry on the list."

This means you'll end up with a bunch of skipped CD's and a high probability of CD's being ripped with the wrong information.

The only advantage is you can load in 20 CD's at once.

Having ripped my entire collection a year ago it took me about 5 days of on and off ripping to do my entire collection which I've not counted but is something in the range of 800 - 1,000 CD's I'd guess. I used J River Media Center and encoded everything in a lossless format FLAC in case anyone is curious.
