Hi-
I am thinking of renting the Long Wharf Resort 2bed for the last week of Aug. I found someone who has Wyndham points and posted an ad on both Craigslist and Redweek for this resort. She is asking $150 a night which is the lowest that I have seen. I can pay her thru paypal or by check. Does anyone have advice on renting and is there any risk in doing so? I am also wondering if there is a better/nicer timeshare in Newport RI than the long Wharf? Thanks for any insight !

You may want to verify if this person is a Wyndam Owner or not.
- Ask for a written rental agreement
- Verify their ownership before renting
- Keep all receipts

Long Wharf is a nice resort. Most units do not have a washer and dryer. Just something unusual for a nice resort so I wanted to make sure you were prepared for that.

She says she is deeded at the Long Wharf and she would draw up a rental agreement. Is this enough to ensure that I will be booked when I get there?

You don't even have to be deeded at Newport to book a unit. Wyndham has not problem letting owners rent ANY unit, whether you own at that resort or not.

Ask if they are VIP, if they are , there is no transactions charge to them to make the booking. Ask them to book the unit and send you a copy of the confirmation (still in their name).

Pay them and then have them switch the booking to your name and resend the confirmation.

also, be aware that Redweek offers a rental escrow service. Basically you pay the escrow company and the owner doesn't get paid until AFTER you have checked in at the resort.

Eliminates any worry. There is a small fee for it, but it gives you peace of mind.

If the owner decides not to rent to you even if you offer to pay the escrow fee, you'll know its a scam.

Also, I think to list on redweek you need a credit card, so there is some protection there, unless of course its a stolen CC #.

Most deeded owners (I am one) own floating intervals and have not converted to points. If this is the case in your situation, you will not receive a guest certificate. Have her add your name to the reservation as her guest and provide you with the reservation number. With that information, you can call the resort to verify that your name has been added to the reservation.

Just posting so as to back up Regatta333, there is little reason for prime time Newport owners to convert to points and the advice she has given is spot on.

Sometime we rate the quality of the advice received on the volume so I'm just adding to the volume.

I will take the rental contract. and just ask her how she want to confirm your reservation. She should be able to tell you.

I have fixed Wyndham unconverted week, I just call the resort to add the guest, and I give the guest phone number which they can also found from RCI to verify it. Contract is more important in this case.

On the other hand, if I have FSP week, I will have to ask Wyndham to send me a GC (and pays them), and send to the Guest.
