OK, so we have finally broken down and purchased a new Dell desktop computer. I am not the brightest when it comes to computers. My children are after us to give up aol, and start new with another email address and home page. I need the most user friendly. I liked the look of aol, with the current news, weather, quick links to travel and directions. I am tossing between MSN or Google. Any suggestions?

DH has us hooked up to RefDesk.

Who is your internet service provider (ISP)? Most of them allow you to personalize a home page these days. You can create your own home page to include weather, tickers, travel, news, email, etc. See if you have something like that, so you can create exactly what you want.

For the home page that the browser opens when you start it, I use a blank page. Your home page is simply a matter of preference. I like using a blank page so it loads and starts faster and I use bookmarks to take me to whatever site I want to visit. Unless I'm traveling, the browser is always open anyway.

For email, gmail (google email) can't be beat. You can use it with any email program since they support both POP and imap email protocols for getting mail and secure smtp for sending email and all email clients support all of those protocols. You can also just use the gmail.com web interface, which is useful for searching all your email. The storage is huge, and they don't charge extra like other free email sites do for being able to access your email using any email client (ie, outlook, outlook express, thunderbird, etc.) Instructions for configuring your email client to work with gmail are found on their web site and are very simple to follow.

I use CNN.com as my home page. That way I get the news several times a day.

I have personalized an excite.com page with our birthdays, movie theaters, weather for upcoming trips, etc.

Okay, now I'm embarassed. TUG IS my home page.

Yes, I have no life, I know.

That makes it sound like it is wrong. I have it has my home page too.

I have been using iGoogle as my home page for a while now. You can customize it with TONS of free "gadgets" (as they call them) and drag-n-drop how you want them. The gadgets include personalized stock lists, news feeds, youtube content, games, utilities -- just about anything you can imagine.

You can select themes, and have multiple tabs to organize your gadgets into logical groups. It has always been quick to load and very reliable. And free! (without any annoying ads!!!)

I guess you can tell I sort of like it, huh? :D

I like Yahoo as my home page since it is the search engine that I use the most. I also belong to a couple of yahoo groups so then they're right there for me.

I've used hotsheet.com for 7-8 years.

All the websites are organized and rhere're quick links to email, stock quotes etc.

on my laptop...google is the homepage. its tiny...and loads instantly.
of course the work pc has tug as the homepage =)

My e-mail log in page is my home page. Makes it convenient since I know that is the first thing I check each time.

My Yahoo is great. You can select what you want to see when you open your browser. I selected weather for all the cities that I use to travel too, movies (provides listing of show, time and location), local news, financial news, email, maps and directions, TV listings and a whole lot more. You select what you want to see when you open Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc...

I use myway.com It is alot like excite.com but with no ads or pop ups so it loads fast.

Thanks everyone for your input. When a poster mentioned about the home page and using it to search as well, I never really thought of that convience. I played around with a few of them, and I think we decided on Google.
