Airtran or Southwest and why

I've pretty much narrowed it down to Airtran or Southwest from Philly to LAX because they are much lower than the other airlines and both around the same price. I flew Southwest last month RT PHL to LAX and was very pleased, probably because I only had carryon and was luck to get "A" seating.
Never flew Airtran so I have no experience there.

If you had to choose between these 2 airlines, which would it be and why. TIA

I also am pretty certain I will take a shuttle from LAX to Camarillo where I will be staying. Less chaos and I know I'll be tired after travelling and don't want any surprises. Thanks for the suggestion.

Since you were "very pleased" with Southwest, I would suggesting using them again. You can check-in 24 hours in advance on-line and that will get you the A boarding pass.

I just heard ATA is declaring bankruptcy, cancelled all flights. Is that the same or different than Airtran?
Liz

Different.
The similarity of AirTran's name to ATA has led to brand-confusion. In July 1997, AirTran was merged with ValuJet. Subsequently they became AirTran, due in part to adverse publicity from the crash of flight 592.

Can you get a nonstop to LAX on SW? I think Airtran routes most of their flights through Atlanta.
I have flown both.....and have had positive experiences with both of them. Just read the "fine print" for Airtran....I think if you want to pre-book your seats, they charge an extra fee now. I was considering both airlines for an upcoming trip to Orlando...and while AT was a bit cheaper, if I added in the extra fees, it really didn't save any money. If I remember correctly, the snacks are better on SW...especially on a cross country flight. (Flew SW to Oakland last year.)

I like AirTran and I particularly like they fly from little SWF Stewart Airport an hour north of me and also HPN White Plains. (They do fly out of LGA & EWR as well) That in itself makes the change of planes in Atlanta worthwhile for flights other than MCO FLL & ATL.

You can go on-line and get your boarding passes 24 hours prior to the flight at no additional charge.

Flying them again to Sarasota this month.

SW does not have non stop to LAX but I don't really have a problem with that. With carry-on luggage there is no fear that my luggage won't reach my destination.

I can fly SW for half the amt other family members are flying on US Air but they specifically want non stop because they are travelling with children (and other hang-ups).

I'm afraid to wait any longer to purchase my tickets in case the desired travel times are taken and/or the rates go up.

Thanks for the tidbit on extra fee for seat selection on Airtran. I'll probably purchase SW today.

Thanks again.

Lawren, you posted before I finished my post. I fly from Philly either way so that is not a factor for me but thanks for your input

Kay the seating charge is not a MUST but an option for ATA. JFYI. :)

BTW AirTran customer service is fantastic!

I would go with SWA, only because I would feel safer that they won't go under before you fly!

Kay, remember with Southwest, if you book now and the fares go down it's very easy to rebook and get the credit. You won't get a refund, but you'll have credit good for a year from the time you booked the original ticket. I'm sitting with almost $200 in credits by doing this.

Go Southwest!! We had an Airtran flight booked last year--a direct flight, day flight and then that was cancelled for some reason (their convenience), and they put us on a red-eye flight with a LONG lay over.--and this happened both ways of the flight!! I cancelled, of course, but they ARE NOT reliable! I have had much better service w/ Southwest.

OK everybody. I just made my ressies with southwest air, one stop but do not exit plane. It was $36 higher than yesterday but I got the flight times I want. Thank you so much for your tips. Will wait until May to book the shuttle to Camarillo. It was $300 less than flying into Oxnard and a van will be much cheaper than that.

Thanks a bunch.
