I haven't been able to find the answer to this question on a search, so any input would be appreciated.

Spring break is our intended usage time every year. We just returned from a rented week at Neport Coast Villas and are considering purchasing resale. Spring break here is gold.

For trading purposes does this make a difference for trading purposes where the resort time may be platinum for this time period?

Can you purchase a platinum week and still book gold or do you have to stay in the gold time?

If Maui is are favorite spring break spot, are we likely to get trades for Maui eoy of so, or if we want Maui does it make more sense to own there and pay the higher maintenace fees?

Incidently, the price this last weekend was
$30,000 2010 usage
250,000 bonus points
100,000 2008 points
100,000 2009 points

Thanks,
Mike

My sense is that Newport Coast would trade well with either the Gold or Platinum seasons, although others may have different opinions.

If you purchase a Platinum week, your owner's priority will be only for Platinum weeks. If your Spring Break is in the Gold season, and you plan to mostly use the week at NCV, then buy a Gold week and save the money. Platinum owners who want to occupy a Gold week must trade in like everyone else (although they do get the theoretical advantage of the 21 day trading priority over non-Marriott owners).

The demand in Hawaii is more spread out throughout the year than many other resort destinations. Consequently, getting the week you want can sometimes be easier. Example: I can still book spring break at Waiohai.

However, if you are wanting to trade a 2BR NCV Gold into a 2BR Maui Ocean Club (MMO) on a very busy spring break week, you may have a problem. You chances of getting a 1BR are much, much better. Many Maui owners split their weeks and deposit as 1BR + studio.

With that, you may consider purchasing a MMO 1BR and saving a little money. This week would trade just as well as, if not better than, a 2BR NCV Gold week. I do not know if NCV Gold weeks get AC's with II, but MMO 1BR's do.

IMHO

Welcome to TUG!!

The trading power of a week isn't dependant on the marriott seasons but the II demand for that week. Many gold weeks at NCV are stronger traders than many fall platinum weeks. ( But the summer platinum weeks are the strongest)

As a marriott week owner, you can only reserve during your season. So platinum owner can only reserve during platinum season and can not reserve during gold season. So buy gold (resale around $13K) and save money.

Since most Maui owners split their weeks and deposit as 1BR + studio, getting a 2 bedroom trade into Maui is very hard no matter what you're trading. If you willing to go to Kuiai, Waiohai is all 2 bd like NCV so getting a 2 bd there is doable.

Newport Coast trade into Maui

I've had an open request for a trade of our 2 BR Newport Coast for one of about 5 locations in Maui -- for just a Studio -- for a week in September. I've had NO success to date.

What NCV week did you deposit with II, and when did you make your deposit?
When did you place your trade request with II?

These things are all part of the II equation.

We've owned at Waiohai for several years, 2 bedroom ocean view, and it's all considered platinum season, and we've never seen Maui available as an exchange. I think if you want to go to Maui regularly, I would buy there. The only Hawaii exchange that ever seems to come up for us is Ko Olina.

The Gold Season at NCV is essentially the first half of the year. As at any resort with floating week seasons, some weeks are more desirable than others. It's likely that many NCV Gold Season owners want Easter week and other prime spring break weeks, and that only the owners who get their reservations at the first opportunity will be successful.

As others have noted, II cares about the actual demand for a week, not about how Marriott defines and sells seasons. So a "Gold" Easter week is likely to have stronger exchange power than an obscure early November "Platinum" week — but a prime August "Platinum" week will be stronger than an Easter week.

Can you purchase a platinum week and still book gold or do you have to stay in the gold time?
With Marriott, you must book a week within the season you own. And that's subject to availability. You can use II to exchange into another season, but with no guarantee of success.

As others have noted, trading into Maui is difficult even for those at the top of the II food chain. It's even more difficult if you want a 2BR rather than a 1BR or studio.

If you really want to go to Maui every other year, consider buying an EOY week at Marriott's Maui Ocean Club. That way you can book resort accommodations 12 months out and book frequent flyer award tickets 11 months out. If you buy ocean view, you'll get ocean view accommodations.
