I'm thinking about to buy a TS in resale market. My time is pretty flexible, and want to have vacations in different places all around world. But, quite confused about these two different systems. Should anybody can make a comparision, and tell me which is better? Thank you in advance!
Your header listed which is better, a hotel-based TS or a points-based TS. There appears to be two questions here. Only you can tell what is right for you.
1) The first question appears to be a hotel-based TS or a condo-based TS. Using DVC as an example, since the system has both, a condo-based system is more spread out. An example of this would Saratoga Springs and Old Key West. A hotel-based TS is more like BoardWalk Villas or Villas at the Wilderness Lodge which are attached to a hotel and all the amenities that hotel provides. You park in a parking lot and find your room by walking through the lobby or other areas Some people like being in a hub of activities that some hotel-based TS provide while others prefer the quieter pace that the Condo-style resorts have. In a condo-style TS, you would park in front of your unit and normally not go through a lobby. Neither is wrong; just personal choice.
2) The second question seems to be about points-based TS system versus weeks-based TS system. Again neither is wrong depending on your vacation style. A weeks-based system has you staying for a week at at time usually with a checkin on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. A points-based system will let you check in usually any day of the week for any length of stay that you have enough points for. If you normally go on vacation for a week, checking on the weekend, effectively there is no difference between a points-based system and a weeks-based system other than in a weeks-based system, your week will always be there every year at the same time unless you specify otherwise. In a points-based system, the assumption is that you would not be using the week that you own and so you need to specify that you will be using the week. In addition, since a points-based system will have a complete staff all week rather than just during the busier times for the weeks resources, there may be slightly higher maintenance fees. In addition, in some points-based system, unless you stay the entire week, you may have to pay housekeeping costs. Depending on the system, you may have to pay a fee to make a reservation.
The points-based system that I have referred to have been based on you owning a week that has been converted into points. An example of this system is RCI Points. What I like to think of as a pure points based system where you don't have an ownership right to a specific week but a percentage ownership can be seen in Hilton, DVC, DRI (Sunterra), and some others. DVC and DRI don't require you to pay a reservation fee or housekeeping fees no matter the length of stay.
3) Doug has provided you with some information on a few points-based systems but there are others. There are similarities between all points-based system but there are differences as well. You may find that a feature in one system is not available in another. As an example, in OLCC Global Access, you may be able to make a reservation 3 years out whereas other systems it may be 13 months or 10 months or using DVC as an example, you may be able to make a reservation at your home resort 11 months out but not be allowed to make reservations at the other resorts within the system until 7 months.
This should be enough to get you started. Do your research and you should be happy.
