Today is the 4th time I have talked to a friend, whom I have told to buy resale time and time again, who "upgraded" a weeks resort timeshare with the developer. They bumped up a $15K mistake to a $25K mistake...This was after I sent them to the Holidaygroup website and showed them what their 15K mistake was selling for ($1776 now on sale for 20% off ) and they believe someone they don't know over me. Help, how do I get through to my friends, not to make the same mistake I did?

Lets face it that some people just deserve to lose their money. This is why it gets ridiculous when some people come on these forums and whine about being scam!:wall:

People ask questions and get good advice in most cases and then do what they planned on doing anyway. Later their crying about timeshares and low-lifes ripping them off when in fact it was their own stupidity that got them in the mess.

Its hard to feel sorry for some that come on these forums to complain.

After dealing with some of these people on a forum you understand how they got into their mess!:crash:

Hey, what do you know? I mean, you're just somebody who's a familiar part of their crowd of friends & acquaintances. Your status as such can't hold a candle to the pedigree of the vacation ownership professionals who showed them the true advantages of prepaid vacations they get by locking in luxury accommodations at today's costs. And so on & so forth right on down the line.

So now that they're invested psychologically as well as financially in their full-freight timeshare, do you think that's going to make them more open or less open to seeing through the fog & cutting through the baloney?

You did what you could. They didn't get it. There are none so blind as they who will not see. So it goes.

Well, you can't hold a gun to their head. Its like dealing with someone who has an addiction. You can give them the information, but unless they're self-motivated to help themselves, the addiction will win.

Thanks you guys make good sense. Its just a bit frustrating, when they call me during the presentation and still "upgrade" which I think is the biggest scam. I fell for the "upgrade" and wanted to puke when I saw how little "VIP" status got me. The only thing I "saved" on was the exta $500 a year in mainenance fees, but paid $1000 this year in interests. So we will be paying it off with our tax return, and I could kick myself. They own at Williamsburg plantation a 4br with a Dec. fixed week and upgraded to a 4br with a Oct. fixed week (which they got at a steal of a deal for just $10K more than what they are paying now?!)get a better trade...what sense does that make? Anywho...thanks again and I will turn off my phone and let them make the next mistake without frustrating me. :annoyed:

Don't try to convert them. Just thank them. Thank them for keeping the timesharing market alive and vibrant.

If it weren't for customers who buy from the developer, we wouldn't have all the great deals we do today.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink...

Three years ago, my B-I-L and his wife and their 2 best friends, also our friends, went to Las Vegas on one of those vacation deals. I talked to them ahead of time and said to enjoy their time, but to JUST SAY NO.

The day they returned I find out that the friends bought a 2-week package. They were raving about the deal they worked out, getting them to lower the price 25% and that they threw in 3 "free" vacations to anywhere they wanted to go ( bonus weeks?? ) I immediately advised them to rescind since they still had time. I showed them printout of the same exact resort selling for $1500-2000 per week. "But the free vacations??" They were so hung up on that and refused to rescind. I think they are still paying off the original purchase as well as the MFs.

Anyway, three years later, three MF payments later, they have yet to use the free vacations, nor have they used any of the weeks they bought. They are not interested in going back to Las Vegas, just want to trade to other places. They can't ( won't) plan more than 3-4 weeks out and are constantly complaigning that II never has anything they want when they call. I have tried to convince them that they have to plan further out and schedlue other things around the vacation. Even showing them what I have planned 18-24 months ahead. They can't seem to find a way to do that.

Oh well......

All you can do is try.

Try To Save A few

For what its worth, you guys saved me $6,000 (plus mf).

After spending $58,000 for a TS (God, was I nuts, or what?), I discovered TUG. Then I considered buying a TS at Timeberlodge, resale, for $6,000 (plus $700 mf).

So I asked the good people at TUG what to do. They did the math for me (I'm math challenged), and they showed me that I could rent at Timberlodge for less than the yearly mf.

So I spent a wonderful week at Timberlodge for less than the mf (and I see the poor lady who owns that $6,000 timeshare still has been unable to unload it).

However, I must report that I spent a lot of time in the jacuzzi at MOC last week and I found it interesting how wealthy many of the owners were (I mean really wealthy). Many of them owned multiple weeks. Some brought numerous family members every year. They loved their yearly family gatherings at Marriott. [Read my just posted review of the Lahaina Villas and you'll see that we really love our unit there.]

If one has the money - money is no concern - then spending a lot of money for timeshares that will be used yearly by the family is not all that bad. For those who can afford it the vacation experience can be wonderful. No different than the money my dad spent on the boat he owned (man was that a money pit).

There is a mark waiting to be snagged at every little table. Nothing but Weasel food

Alan absolutely nailed it. They buy into the picture painted by professional schmoozers trained to deplete the wallets of the true believers. Also known as sales weasels. At least they have raised the stature of personal injury lawyers, class action shysters and car salesmen to one rung below the bottom.

Don't worry, you'll be "at fault" when they decide they paid too much, can't afford the purchase cost and annual fees and then find out that they can't get 10% of what they paid if they find a buyer. "Why didn't you tell them?"

And then there will be another couple disparaging timeshare ownership as a scam and a money pit. Yet the developer weasels laugh all the way to the bank (King David - how many millions sucked from poor people you suckered this week?) It is sad but you did what you could. Now I'd avoid discussion about it with those folks going forward.

Somebody's gotta pay full freight for there to be a resale market :D

But on the other hand my former renter John S. is happy that they saved about $10,000 and then bought from you after I was able to get them to recind.

That helped put a smile on my face even through it did not put any money in my pocket. In fact it might have cost me a rental or two but that is OK. I hate seeing people getting screwed when there is a better alternative.

Bruce :D
