Southern Cali in late August?

OK,

Have to go by the kiddies' school schedules now. I'm thinking the crowds at Spring Break would be unbearable for me, so that's probably out. What do you guys think of late August? We'd like to stay at Newport Coast or Aviara. We want to go to the beach, do Disneyland, San Diego, etc. Will it be too hot?

The other possibility would be the beginning of November when they are off for 3 days. I don't mind taking them out for 2 extra. Which dates are better?

Thanks!

This past August we had an extreme heat wave and severe power outages at the end of August. But thankfully that is not the norm.

August is still quite hot, but if you come in late August the crowds will be much smaller since many schools outside of CA seem to start in early or mid August. My kids were at Disney at the beginning of summer and it was very crowded, then they went again in August and they said the crowds were much much smaller.

Personally...

If I had to time it to the school schedules, I'd opt for EARLY summer (June) or possibly even spring break period to do Disney. However @ the beach, water temps here during spring break will still be in the mid-upper 50's...by June they should reach the low 60's. August will be much warmer, both water and air but it gets pretty hot around Anaheim in August.

If you could come in early Nov. the crowds at Disney, San Diego will be less. The weather in early Nov. is unpredictable...could be nice enough to go to the beach or sweater weather.

This past July we were at the Marriott Newport Coast Villas and the east coasters on the shuttle to Crystal Cove beach were loudly voicing their dissappointment in California and I think specifically beaches...So maybe the east has better beaches....I don't know..Maybe come for the attractions like Legoland, Sea World, Disneyland, CA Adventure, Universal Studios, Hollywood etc....

The crowds are still in S. Cal until after Labor Day and so is the heat.

Good luck!!

Based on your time restrictions, I would say that late August would be just fine. Yes, we had a hot spell here in August but it wasn't that bad and it is not a normal occurrence. I have been in far worse in a normal summer in other places. I would definitely not come in June for 2 reasons. First, you may get hit with the June Gloom which are days with a heavy marine layer and also the ocean temps will be very cold. Some days in June the sun does not come out at all on the coast. June Gloom varies from year to year. Some years are very bad and others are not so it is a hit and miss situation.

So there you have it...two locals who think June & August are best...we just don't agree which is best.

John's correct though about June gloom. Most of the time it clears by mid-day inland, but it can hang around the coast all day. I don't like it hot and I'm not big on crowds...which has alot to do with my answer earlier.

You and I are having the same disagreement that is so common in Southern California. I don't like the coolness and dampness of the coast but prefer the hotter drier weather. I agree on the crowds. Actually the kids go back to school here around the 20th or so of August.

The beaches are not better on the east coast but I think a lot of east coasters are used to going to Florida which has warmer, prettier ocean. But I'll take the cold water over sharks :)

I lived in Fort Lauderdale Florida for 8 years. I agree that the ocean is definitely warmer in Florida. However I believe that the California coastline and beaches are much more attractive than Florida. JMHO

The further inland you go, the hotter it will likely be. While highs at the beach may be in the mid-70's, 20 miles inland it can be 90 degrees.

Since you're talking about Orange County/San Diego I'm assuming that you're not thinking about going to Magic Mountain. (My kids first choice is SoCal was always Magic Mountain.) Should you go to Magic Mountain, August temps are typically in the mid-90's and often into the low 100's. (But it's dry heat - with ample water I can get along fine with 100 deg at MM; growing up in the Midwest mid-90's there was far, far worse.)

You will do just fine in late August.....the crowds are significantly reduced as school is back in session for many school districts. And if you are near the coast the 'heat' is perfect unless it is like this past August when we had a very rare high heat and humidity wave.....It felt like we were back east in August - yuck.

From mid Aug to Labor day you are only dealing with the locals since most California Schools start after Labor Day

Aviara is beautiful, but I would opt for Newport Coast with kids for easier access to off resort events
