Free AOL - any downside at all?

I am still paying $7.95 per month for AOL, but I know you can also have it for free. I was under the mistaken (I think, but who knows...everyone there seems to have a different answer) impression that I could not longer use the AOL software with free AOL, and I like the software and don't like using aol.com.

Anyone else here use free AOL and also use the AOL software without a problem? Is there any downside at all to converting to free AOL?

Thanks!

Sharon

I have had free AOL for Broadband users for over a year. I didn't see a change from when I paid for it and when it went free.

No difference between paying for AOL and free AOL, other than the $ of course. :)

What about when using dial up at a hotel that charges $12 to hook up to broadband. Is AOL still 'free' away from home and your broadband?

Brian

aol is only free if you have your own internet connection....it doesnt matter what this internet connection is (dialup vs broadband)

but if you still want to dial into their access numbers...youd have to pay.

Yes, its still free if using a hotels wireless or wired internet access.

Thanks for the input. I went ahead and changed my billing to zero dollars. I guess I've basically been paying for nothing, since I couldn't even dial-up if I wanted to...no modem!

Sharon I've been paying AOL for absolutely no reason too. I'm worse off than you are...I'm paying a lot more than 7.99 a month!!! URGH!!! I have cable access and will look into the free feature ASAP.

In addition to no access to dial-up (something I find essential when traveling), you also lose "space" on the WWW for things like personal web sites. My DH is really the "techie geek" of our household and said that there are still some software bugs in the completely free version and that they have so many advertising pop-ups that it makes using AOL a real PITA.

So for now, we'll continue to pay our monthly fees.

Continue to Pay

I continue to pay the $7.99 because I can have access when I travel. I know there are other services out there, but this is my insurance policy. I can also use dial-up if the cable should go down.

I have had AOL since 1998 and the free AOL since they first started giving it away. I get no pop ups at all, no glitches, nothing. It is absolutely the same as it was before. The only thing that changed was that I dont have to pay the $$ anymore.

You should change to the free version. Your burning $ for no reason.

You still can use free AOL at any hotel that has wired or wireless internet.

I was led to believe that the only difference in paying for aol service is that you can have customer support. If you do not pay, then no customer support. Beats me, but we have not had a problem in the year or so that we have not been paying.
