Questons staying at Grand Mayan NV

We will be at the Grand Mayan NV in two weeks, questions I have are:

The resort evidently has a shuttle that will pick up passengers at the airport, what is the cost for someone that trades into the resort? Do I just call the resort and make a reservation

I see that there is a tax on the room, anyone know what amount I should expect?

The safes in the room are they a combination lock? or does it have a key and how much do they charge to use the safe?

I plan on tipping the maids on a daily basis, what amount per day is reasonable?

Also wondering if we agree to take a TS tour, what do they offer as an incentive?

We will be staying in a one bedroom, another couple will be going with us, is it possible to upgrade to a two bedroom, any idea what it would cost for the upgrade?

Thanks,

I haven't used their service, It is something I may need to check into on our next trip to the GM.

We had a one bedroom unit and the tax was about $16 US per week

The safe is $25 per week for non owners, it is digital and easy to use

We tipped the make up maid $2 usd or 20 pesos per day and the turn down maid $1 us or 10 pesos.

The give you 1000 peso credit on your bill plus 10% off most purchases at the GM or MP. If you take advantage of the beach parties and eat some of your meals, it adds up to a pretty sizable savings.

Thanks,

I don't know about that. I have heard some getting them for as little as $70 extra per day. When we asked they said the didn't have any??

They want you to take their shuttle to the resort to screen you from the OPCs hawking tours at other resorts. At the airport, the vendors have to stay behind some barriers, and airport personnel will try to direct you to the shuttle check-in desk for your resort before you reach the vendor area. It's a bit of a zoo atmosphere when you reach the area where the vendors are located and are allowed to try to hawk their services.

Same thing applies if you have a rental car, except that at the rental car agency there will be an OPC who will try to sign you up for a tour at some resort as part of the check-in process.

If you want to do a tour, you should decide which resort you want to tour before you arrive. Then negotiate the best deal that you can with an OPC for that resort. We went for $US100 for the rental car credit, plus a free one-day bus tour we were interested in, and about $US50 in miscellaneous other goodies. We toured at Paradise Village.

The Mayan will try to sign you up for a sales presentation when you check-in, and they will offer to match the terms of any invite you have. Most of the tour people will demand a deposit (to ensure you show up); I don't know if the Mayan will also match the deposit you would forfeit if you switched to their tour.

We tipped the maid $US2 per day.

If you choose not to use the room safe, you can leave stuff with the concierge - no charge for that service, I believe, other than any gratuity you might give the concierge.

We tipped the maid between $3 and $5 per day. We had a man, named Angel who was wonderful. One day, we were left a lovely, huge tropical flower arrangement. There were incredible towel creations on our bed each day. We rented a car and said "no" to all timeshare offers. We value our time too much to do a tour in PV or NV.

Thanks for the replies,

I have one more question, our friends will be checking in the day after we arrive, Can we just leave instructions at check-in to allow them to have a key? Or will it be necessary for us to be with them when they check in?

The only question unaswered is does anyone know the cost to use their shuttle?

Thanks again.

The transportation from the airport to the GM is free for owners. For exchangers they charge $11 per person. You need to email the concierge and make the arrangements. Since there were 5 in our party, I just used a taxi from the airport and it was 450 pesos or $45. There is a less expensive way to do it if you don't have much luggage and only a few people in your party. You could take your luggage and walk across the bridge and catch a yellow cab. I don't know for sure, but think the total cost would be around 300 pesos.

We recently returned from the GM -- if you have any other questions go ahead and ask. Tim
