When I have had to cancel I have not gotten TPUs back (I have weeks). You also forfeit the trade fee. However the last time this happened I was able to get the trade fee refunded through the travel insurance I'd take out through Jet Blue airlines.

If you buy their travel protection, either when you book or soon after, you will get your TPUs back. I've never done that.

It is very hard to find any information about this on the RCI website. I found this using Google. It's from AI so I don't know how much I trust it:

RCI cancellation policies
generally offer a 24-hour grace period for a full refund of exchange fees and points/trading power if cancelled by the next business day. Without protection, cancellations made closer to the check-in date result in forfeited fees and points, while purchasing Points Protection allows for cancellations up to the day of check-in with point reinstatement.

I agree that RCI has very little information on their website on the insurance. I believe if you get the insurance, which costs $89, and you cancel, you don't get your $299 exchange fee back. That is a lot of money to pay

I did find very little information on their website. I am more concerned with getting my TPUs back since I would only be using part of my TPUs from my banked week. I am also wondering if anyone has gotten the resort fee waived when trading back into their own resort.

If you take out the RCI points protection you will get your TPUs back. My home resort doesn't have a resort fee so I can't tell you if any fee is waived if you trade into your home resort.

You should have 24 hours to cancel a reservation.

Points protection doesn't cover the exchange fee which can sometimes be more than the value of the TPUs or points used for the reservation.

RCI cancellation policy is pretty straight forward.

1. You can cancel a reservation if it is less than 24 hrs. (Watch the Saturday evening website shut down, customer service is not open during that time either).
2. After 24 hours, you can cancel and get your TPUs or points back of you purchased the "points/TPU protection". You do not get the $299 exchange fee even with their insurance. For the price they charge, it will depend on how many points or TPUs you are using for the reservation to make it sensible to buy their insurance. You might find better value buying an insurance that covers your whole trip for less.
