We recently returned from a stay in Washington DC. Of note our unit at the Mayflower had a Keurig Mini with 4 pods of coffee provided. I wonder if this will be a trend for the future? If it is they’ll need to do a better job cleaning the machines. Apparently someone had tried to “reheat” a cup by pouring it through again and the water reservoir again. I had to do a little cleaning on it and run several cups of water through it until the water came out clear again. Even then I preferred to just go to the reception area on the 7th.floor and get a cup of coffee from their machine.

I'm also curious to see if this portends a broader shift. To date I have never seen a Keurig in any Marriott/Sheraton/Westin timeshare. My wife loves Keurigs (at least the standard sized ones) and is always disappointed to not have them.

We are seeing Nespressos.

This was a first for us. I recently purchased a carrying case for our Keurig Mini and now take it with us as a carry on when flying.

I had Hilton points to burn so we reserved a room at their Washington resort The District and offered it to family. That unit also had a Keurig Mini.

If you request one they will bring it to you.

I don't think the properties are shifting toward Keurig. I suspect they had one at Mayflower due to the size of the unit and counter space. I can't remember the last property I saw a Keurig. Most of the time is is full size drip or a drip where it holds the coffee in an internal storage and you can dispense single servings.

I don’t think this is a trend at timeshare properties. Maybe in hotel room-style properties without real kitchens, but even then I have not seen them in timeshares much. The pods are more expensive and that adds up, which is reason enough that they aren't likely to switch. I did see them at the Mayflower but that's probably because the rooms are small and there's really not a great place to rinse/clean the carafe etc. I wouldn't expect to see Keurigs in timeshares with kitchens or even kitchenettes.

I stopped using coffee makers in hotel rooms, I have seen too many of them that are never cleaned, and read too many gross things online (the other day, I read somebody's "hack" of how they use the hotel coffeemaker to wash their dirty underwear when they travel. Can we all say EWWWWWWW!?) Hotel housekeepers don't thoroughly clean those machines and in the absence of laundry and kitchen facilities, they may get used in very unintended ways.

In timeshares with kitchens it's less of an issue, and we usually have washer/dryer so I don't have to worry about underwear in the coffeemaker... Plus with a kitchen you can actually wash it before use.

European MVC resorts have Nespresso pod compatible machines.
Some Asian MVC resorts have also introduced some of these now.

We always clean our coffee pot before and after our visit to any timeshare.

I do too, but I worry less about the timeshare coffeemakers than the hotel ones. People in hotels don't have washer/dryers or kitchens and may use their coffeemakers in all kinds of inappropriate ways, some of which are going to be hard to "clean away" in just the bathroom sink.

One advantage of the Keurig pods is that they last a lot longer then the coffee pouches that preceded them. Those things were always stale when I went to use them.

I didn’t realize they were stale, I always just thought it was bad (cheap) coffee.

One of our first stops is always the local supermarket to get breakfast stuff, including a bag of decent coffee!

Give em a sniff. If you can't smell a strong coffee scent, they are stale.

We bought a Keurig Mini-Mate that fits perfectly in my carryon, so I take it when we travel to our Vacation Club properties. Since both of us drink just one cup of coffee when we get up, it's perfect for our needs.

Keurig seems to be proliferating everywhere. We are grind-your-own-beans and brew 'em folks. Yet when I bought coffee at Costco recently, there was just a couple of whole beans available and 6-8 Keurig and a couple of Nespresso varieties.

Is everyone switching or am I just a hold-out?

We stayed at a new Marriott Suites hotel in Oregon on our way home. It had the mini pod type coffee maker but they also served free breakfast. The coffee at the free breakfast was ok for free coffee.

The unit had dishes and utensils but I'm with you on the gross factor.

I did like the room for an overnight stay.

Keurig has started to appear in UK/Europe, but the brand is still not common.
We also have a bean to cup machine at home in the UK, but also a Nespresso pod compatible machine which we take on trips where the resort does not provide them.

I think its popularity is due to the convenience and ease-of-use. Even if you don't grind the beans yourself, some people struggle with figuring out the right amount of grounds and water to use, plus having to deal with filters and cleaning the pot.

That being said, I do agree that as long as you know what you're doing, freshly grinding the beans yourself right before brewing results in much better coffee.

I much prefer ground coffee to Keurig…particularly in Hawaii where it’s easy to find great coffee.

For that matter we prefer Nespresso to Keurig if single serving coffee is desired.

But bad Keurig coffee is easy to find in supermarkets pretty much everywhere 😀

This is pretty much how I feel too. That's why my Costco experience kinda surprised me. Pod coffee is convenient and expensive. Nespresso is just less bad and costs more.

I like strong black coffee. I was disappointed when using a Keurig. I just googled how to make strong coffee in a Keurig and it said to select the smallest size coffee, press "strong or bold" (my machine didn't have that) and use darker or extra bold keurig cups (I couldn't find any).

So, on my Keurig coffee maker, I thought that the coffee was kind of weak.

I am not a crazy tree hugger, but the amount of unnecessary plastic waste created by all those millions of Keurig pods is pretty staggering. I wouldn't get one just for that reason. I drink a lot of coffee and I'd fill my recycling bin with those things – knowing full well that they probably won't actually get recycled.

At home I grind the beans right before I make the coffee. In timeshares, I buy a bag of ground coffee (or buy beans and grind it in the store) and use that. I'm not gung ho enough to bring the grinder with me.

Give this stuff a try if you want strong black coffee in a K-cup.

We have been to Custom house in Boston a few times. We like to brew our own coffee, typically we bring it with us. In the early to mid 2010s they had the same coffee pot that is a most MVC clubs. We were there summer of 2024, and we were disappointed they had switched to Keurig. The only good thing is they do have brewed coffee in the Counting room.
