Hi everyone, I’m Ipsita. About a month ago, I started planning a visit to the Jagannath Temple, and I realized my travel dates might coincide with the famous Rath Yatra.

I’ve heard it’s an incredible and spiritually powerful experience, but also extremely crowded. As this will be my first visit, I’m a bit unsure whether it’s the right time to go or if it might feel overwhelming.

Has anyone here visited during Rath Yatra? Would you recommend it for a first-time visitor? I’d really appreciate any personal experiences, tips, or suggestions to help me decide.

Good morning Ipsita. I have not visited Jagannath Temple nor have I ever traveled to India. I hope that someone knowledgeable can answer your question, but most TUG participants may be like me.

The first thing I thought of when I saw your inquiry was that you may be able to get multiple answers if you visit Reddit sites like r/Hinduism or r/Hindu.

The second thing I thought of, and I thought I'd let you know, is that during one of my visits to Pittsburgh, PA, I dropped someone off during a festival at the Sri Venkateswara Temple in the Pittsburgh area. All I remember is that it was a magnificent, large Hindu temple. And that the temple grounds were packed with people as they apparently come on pilgrimages from throughout North America including Canada.

I was somewhat surprised as the Pittsburgh area has (as far as I know) a relatively small Indian community centered around near suburb Monroeville, PA. Of course, one oftentimes sees Indian people, for example doctors in area hospitals and students at Carnegie-Mellon and other universities, but I never before saw a gathering like THAT.
