Grand Waikikian Penthouse

Our unit was beautiful...but definitely showing its age. The HVAC system had a vibration issue that we fixed by shoving one of the handouts between the vent and the wall, the jets of both Jacuzzis would run for a very short time then just stop and make noise, and in general the furniture had a fair number of dings and dents.

The views from our 'Ala Moana' side unit were actually quite nice and in some ways I liked it better than the 'Diamond Head' view from the lounge. The problem with the 'Diamond Head' view is that there isn't one...the Ali'i tower sits squarely opposite GW and there is something offputting about staring straight at another tower. But while we liked the Marina/city view from inside our unit, the balconies were basically unusable because of the noise coming up from the HVAC equipment on the slightly shorter buildings opposite on Kalia St.

The continental breakfast at the lounge was great w/coffee, tea, juice, and hot/cold water, pineapple, papaya, and other fruits along with bagels, coconut muffins, and other pastries. But the evening 'happy hour' was best avoided with just a few meh small bites (only one hot) and only Budweiser and mediocre red and white wines on offer.

Check in is at the Penthouse lounge...which I'm sure was a lot nicer when HHV/HGVC still did valet parking at Lagoon/GW's porte cochere. Now it just means you and your stuff have to ride the elevator almost all the way to the top of GW before riding it all the way back down to move your car.

Lastly, Hilton Village continued its downward slide with the closure of our favorite restaurant left standing, Hatsuhana. Not that it's HGV's fault but it absence meant that we ended up never eating 'on property' for the first time ever. Which leads us to...

Hokulani 1BR Premium (and 1BR Plus Double Beds)

Our unit was quite nice w/comfortable bed, sofa (bed), etc. The bathroom was also luxurious with a Toto toilet, two sinks with ample countertops, walk in shower, and soaking tub. There was a nice view of Fort DeRussy Beach Park to the southeast though there was a blank concrete wall directly to the east. The balcony is Juliette...which was OK since the HVAC below meant you couldn't stay on the balcony anyway. The 1BR Plus Double was on the other side of Hokulani on a lower floor and didn't have much of a view.

On the 16th floor is a rooftop pool, bar, and lounging area. The roofdeck was really quite nice with lots of loungers, chairs, and umbrellas. That said, the pool is small and shallow and the hot tub is also small. We went up a couple of times to enjoy the outdoors and it was never crowded. Waikiki beach is basically a two block walk away.

Parking is valet only with great service (our car was always instantly available) and was a welcome change from Lagoon/GW where your onsite options are self park in the nasty main HHV garage or wait for the overwhelmed valet service at the main hotel entrance. It was also cheaper than either option at GW.

Lastly, the big advantage of Hokulani over HHV is that you really are right in the heart of Waikiki. It's next to the Royal Hawaiian shopping center with many, many great restaurants, bars and shops a short walk away. The big disadvantage is that it isn't oceanfront and the pool while pleasantly quiet is really just for a quick dip to cool down.

All that said...this was an interesting experiment made possible by HGVC's Winter 2026 discounts. I had always wanted to try the GW Penthouse units and Hokulani was something different. I can't imagine ever swapping our Oceanfront Lagoon unit with its amazing view and quiet balcony for GW or Hokulani again.

Curious re HHV/Oahu vs Waikoloa/BI: Thoughts?
(I have been to BI & Maui many times but never to Oahu: have heard it is very crowded, a la Vegas vs the chill, laid back vibe of BI (which resonates with me more)...
Appreciate any input...
Mahalo!

Waikiki *is* very crowded...but I more compare the vibe to South Beach (Miami) than LV. There's a beach, great museums, lots to things to do on both the entertainment and historical/cultural sides, and wonderful food. Waikiki (and Honolulu in general) just skew Hawaiian/Asian/WWII instead of Latin/Honeymooners. And like South Beach, almost everything is walkable and what isn't is just a short Waikiki Trolley, da Bus, or Charlie's Taxi/Uber/Lyft ride away. Waikiki is also a great jumping off point to see the rest of O'ahu since 'all roads lead to Honolulu' and you're almost always going opposite the commute traffic.

Waikoloa gets you on the Big Island which is wonderful...but we're not that fond of Waikoloa itself. But Hawi, Waimea, and the Mid/South Kona Coast are all close-ish and the beaches near Waikoloa (Hapuna, 69, etc.) can't be beat. And we almost always spend a few nights at Volcano or Hilo to see the other other side of the BI as well.

Similarly, we're not that fond of Kaanapali but Hana is enchanting, Haleakala revelatory, and Molokini is our favorite snorkeling spot in Hawaii.

To us O'ahu and Kauai feel the most 'Hawaiian' of the major islands...the Hawaii of today and of the past. YMMV.

We like to stay 5 days in Waikiki after twice as long at Waikoloa, the contrast gives you the full Hawaii experience. The last couple of visits we also prefer Hokulani, more central to the Waikiki shopping and dining district, than HHV.

The drive into Ka’anapali can be tedious! While the vistas are spectacular - the traffic can be unbearable.

Gotta try Hokulani! That’s my take-away from your review. At the GW, You used to be able to take the breakfast items back to your room. We found the breakfast just adequate, and agree the evening pupus lacking. I named the views from the GW of Diamond Head (Di-Ed) you can’t see the middle.

Gotta love Waikiki, most everything is within walking distances. Found a local bar, pastry shop, and ramen noodles just past the post office. Food trucks with amazingly great food a short walking east from the HHV. AND Goofy’s Cafe & Dine for a few short more months. Getting to/from HNL is always easier than the other islands.

The Hawaiian adventures on the other islands are much better!

We are only doing one Hawai’i trip this year and it’s on Maui, and BI.

Definitely agree about Kauai. Not as much about O'ahu. I think that Hawai'i Island has very much of the older feel if one gets off the beaten track. On our last visit we wandered up into the hills to some smaller towns and establishments and it had far less of the modern feel than much of O'ahu. But the latter does have its charms as well.

We're doing two trips this year. A week each on Hawai'i and Maui. We don't island hop when we go.

Cheers.

It's very easy to hop from one of the outer islands and finish on Oahu because a lot of flights route through HNL anyway, so booking a three leg flight is easy. We do 12 nights Waikoloa then 5 nights Oahu. Checking out at 10am we go to Kona for brunch, then a 1pm hop to HNL, then hang at the pool until the unit is ready.

Oh, it's definitely easy, but we like to set up and be there. Packing up, going elsewhere and doing it again is just not for us. Easier to make multiple trips. Out of the Bay Area we can get to any island non-stop with AS/HA. A definite YMMV situation.

Cheers.

We always do O'ahu first because Waikiki kind of serves as a decompression chamber between NYC and Kauai/BI/Maui. Also at this point in our lives we're happy taking the direct flight from EWR/JFK to HNL but need to break up the return through SFO/LAX...which we can do from LIH/KOA/OGG.

Obviously, if you don't live on the East Coast none of this matters.

Really great analysis of the GW penthouse and Hokulani units. Just a couple of notes. If you are going to self park at GW, you can pull a ticket and park, checkin, and go to your unit or waiting lounge. Then, just throw away the ticket and use your room key to exit. There is no need to move your car after checkin.

Your Hokulani premier room was on the wrong side for views, the other side which you had for the plus is much better, I'd say spectacular from the premier floors.

I just checked out of Hokulani and spoke with the GM as I was leaving. They converted the old sales office suite off the lobby to an aarival/departure lounge with showers.

I love the Hokulani, know the managers, all the front desk, and all of the parking valet staff.
Aloha

Sept 2024 - we did 4 islands - 4 days on each. The Island hopping was more exhausting than I thought it would be. We cut it down to 2 Islands last year (March & September) - and this year we cut out March - going to Cabo Azul! It’s a much easier flight from TX, and SoCal.

Two islands really wouldn't be that bad. But we need the frequent flier miles for our status, so better to just go back since the flights from the West Coast are easy.

Cheers.

Have not stayed in the GW or Lagoon Tower yet, but we have stayed at the HHV (Rainbow Tower) and the Grand Islander.

The Grand Islander is one of my favorite properties. We own at Kings Land in Waikoloa and go to Waikiki a lot.

We just stayed at the Maui Bay Villas in Kihei in December. I prefer Kaanapali to Kihei, but MBV was nice, still under construction but didn't hear any noise.

Interesting to hear about the Hokulani and the GW. Thanks for the info!
