I recently visited Orlando and was shocked to find out that cash is no longer an option on the 417 from MCO to HGVC. Plate Pass on a rental car is astronomical considering I only flow through on arrival and departure and dont have any tolls on the days in the middle.but still have to pay the daily.

I read (after the fact) that a toll pass can be reserved at MCO and picked up and returned and you only pay the drive through rate. This may be what I need to do, but it seems.like a hassle to pickup and drop-off on each rental. I go to Orlando several times per year.

Can I buy a Pass and keep it for each visit without it expiring. Id put it in a different rental car on each trip. The state where I live has no toll roads. Anyone have experience with transferring a toll Pass between multiple vehicles?

Yes. I just bought a SunPass transponder at Publix and use it on every trip. You just go into the app and register the license plate for your rental car.

If you go several times a year the Sun Pass is probably the way to go. I only go about 2x a year, so the Visitor Toll Pass works well for me. Either option is going to be way better than what a rental company offers.

The Sun Pass works in states that use EZ-Pass as well. We have used it in Ohio, Indiana, New York and Georgia. No annual fees, either.

You can't transfer the Toll Pass that you pick up. You return it upon departure. You can however just buy a SunPass transponder for $20 at Publix or many other locations. I think they may sell them at CVS and/or Walgreens too. We did this years before we actually moved to Florida.

As for rental cars, the Plate Pass system works differently depending on the rental agency. Some only charge the admin fee for the days where a toll is incurred, while others charge it every day. You need to read up on how each agency works and reserve accordingly. Or just get a SunPass Pro or SunPass Portable transponder that has suction cups. You don't want the SunPass Mini as that is a sticker that once removed would no longer work.

I just take my EZPass with me when I go to Florida. It works from NY all the way down through Florida.

EDIT: So it's likely to be useful for multiple locations so I'd think buying one once and just using that would save you a lot of hassle and potentially money.

Alamo car rental only charges an extra $4.95 on the days that you actually use the pass. So the total charges for going to and from the airport are around $10 plus the toll charges.

yeah NY EZpass works great in Florida and no monthly fee (some states have monthly fees like NJ).

I went to CA and thought it could be used there but not. It’s like another country. What people use in CA? I’m going to Arizona. Is there a device that works both in CA and AZ?

No toll roads in Arizona.

California uses this: https://www.thetollroads.com/

We really don’t have many toll roads so not totally necessary. I have the stickers in all my cars in case I need to use the center lane on I15 in San Diego.

Agreed. Most places you go in California you don't need it. Newport Coast Villas is one big exception though. Using the toll road allows you to bypass the nasty congestion in downtown Newport Beach.

I used to have an (Illinois) I-Pass transponder that I would bring with me to Florida. However, they just did away with the transponders and now use the (non-transferable) RFID stickers, which I would imagine all of the tollway operators will eventually go toward? For that reason, I am hesitant to buy (for an extra fee) a Sun-Pass transponder.

Does anyone have any experience with the tollway transponder rental vending machines I've seen at MCO? Seems like it should be an easy experience?

This is what we use.

We bought an E-Pass from Amazon and bring it with us when we go to Florida. You have to put your rental car’s license plate number in, and remember to change it back when you turn the car in, so you don’t end up paying for the next renter’s tolls.

You can read about it here. They are through the E-Pass program. So technically separate than SunPass, but they work interchangeably.

I don't really know how E-Pass works as it is different than SunPass, but they work interchangeably. I know with SunPass you register your rental but you input your beginning and end dates at the beginning with no need to go back in and remove the car. The system then automatically deactivates the rental in their system on the end date and time.

Just download the Sunpass app and order one online before your trip, it will be mailed to you.. no need to go somewhere physical to buy it

I just purchased the SunPass Pro because it also works in Colorado. I purchased the PeachPass a couple of years ago. Thanks for the information.

SunPass Pro (and even the non Pro) should work in Georgia. No need for that Peach Pass now.

Yes, I know that. I plan to just use the SunPass Pro in rental. I will pack it with me in my backpack, in case I need to in other areas such as Washington, DC.

That is what I use; in the SF Bay area, most of the bridges charge a toll, and this works for those. It also covers carpool lanes, and you set the selector to the number of people in the car to receive any discounts for carpool lane usage.

For Florida and the East Coast, I got the UNI prepaid transponder from Amazon, which works with EZPass. That saved me from needing to buy one locally.

I had one of those UNI devices and I lost it of course.
