Back in the day I had the best windows desk top CPU which was replaced by different windows laptops which was replaced by a Chromebook. I use a Fire Tablet for reading and entertainment mostly on flights. I'm thinking of purchasing a Samsung A9+ to replace the Fire Tablet and Chromebook. I was thinking of trying out a cheap android 16 Chinese tablet with decent specs but my I.T. friend said to try Samsung or Lenovo because they have support.

The main concern for me is , how safe from hacking are these for regular use.

The only thing I use my laptop for anymore is recording my Shortwave Radio broadcast. Otherwise, I do everyone on my phone. My wife does use a Samsung tablet but she mostly uses her phone.🤙🏻

Ugh... Just my personal opinion here. I much prefer my laptop to a phone and tablet as I reply on my phone.
Same here! I get on our DGS's case about watching movies or videos on his phone, a little 2-3" screen, when he could be watching on his laptop, a 15" screen. I keep saying he is ruining his eyes! I have a 10" tablet and a 15" laptop and much prefer the laptop. Not just for the size of the screen, but I need a keyboard, not a touch screen, with my lack of sensation in my thumb, index and middle fingers of my right hand as a result of chemo. When using a touch screen I either end up with many letters from touching too firmly, or I haven't touched hard enough and get nothing. I only use my phone as a computer when we are out away from my laptop and I need to look something up. I very rarely scroll Facebook, read emails or news articles on my phone and that tiny screen. I use my tablet for playing games or when travelling very light for short trips. I have Microsoft 11 and Chrome on my laptop and 2 virus protectors plus a VPN for when I am out of the country but need to watch or read things on Canadian websites.

I find that typing on my laptop is much easier for me than on a tablet, as well as using the 10key function. I don't have any issue with using a tablet or a phone, but the typing is magnitudes easier and faster on the laptop keyboard. It must be because I have been using a full size keyboard since 1985. Lots of muscle memory there.

I wouldn't buy a cheap tablet if I was going in that direction. I agree about security issues.

A tablet cannot replicate a windows laptop unless you just want to browse the internet and social media. I'd never buy an off brand tablet as Samsungs are so inexpensive.

I'm going to try out a couple of the Samsung A9+ with the 8 GB of ram and 128 GB of internal storage. I have had these in the Amazon cart since last night. I think they are way better than a Fire Tablet but probably not as good as this Chromebook. I'm thinking this might be what replaces my lap top.

You may want to try a stylus, such as this one:

elago Premium Aluminum Stylus Pens for All Touch Screen Tablets/Cell Phones, Soft Touch Pen-Point, Precise Touch and Control, Extra Rubber Tip Included[Black] https://a.co/d/cdHQPEv

I have both. The tablet is just for fun stuff, like games that waste my time.

Since I need a laptop for work, I could never replace it with a tablet even if I wanted to, which I don't. I need a physical keyboard; touch keyboards are close to useless for me, especially on a phone. I have an older Samsung tablet that I rarely use.

Go ahead a try the android Samsung tablet (with added tariffs). You will probably be safe
I have two laptops and two e-readers

I've also considered buying a big (10-12") Android tablet, but then I think about where and how I'd use it and other than travel, I'm not sure I would. Maybe in the kitchen?
I do most everything on my phone, including creating and editing spreadsheets, stock charting and trading. I typically don't even reach for the laptop unless I know I have an extended session in front of me or when I know the mobile experience isn't desirable for a particular exercise.

Haven’t had a laptop computer since the iPad first came out. Hard stuff, my Apple Mini does fine.

I have a Samsung tab and love it. Bigger screen than my phone and lots of memory. So easy to watch videos and look at pictures. The only downfall is if I need to print anything, I have to send it to my husband's email address so he can do it.

The only thing I use my tablet for is reading manga. Everything else I do on my phone, or on a real computer. I have a work Windows laptop, and a home Alma 9 Linux desktop. I much prefer real keyboards, and somewhat prefer having a full keyboard and monitor of a desktop. Typing any real reply on my phone is an exercise in frustration, and I find the tablet touch keyboards actually worse than the phone because of having to hold with 2 hands because the keyboard is big and split, and somehow my left hand keeps hitting back, or something random when trying to hold or type.

I generally found Samsung tablets to be quite expensive, but then because of my use, I need a mid sized 10.1-12 inch screen and high resolution, like 2.5k or higher. Most cheap tablets are 720p or 1080p, even if the screen size is big. Which means lower quality display, and for Manga more scrolling around (which I can already do "for free" on my phone so ... yea).

It can be a little tricky, but you can get very similar (for viewing) to the $1,000 Samsung tablet for $250 in the AliExpress versions, like a Xiaomi Poco.

IDK what support you need or think you're getting with a Samsung or really any electronics - but in the last 15 years or so, the support is the same for all of them - you try and ask on the Internet or search for the answer online. The store employees know nothing, and the manufacturer doesn't actually provide much.

In terms of getting hacked, Android is basically Android - so Samsung and everyone else offering Android has about the same security. The main real risk IMO is dodgy apps, and that's handled by Google's Play store the same for all brands.

Our DD was trying to talk me into one of those. With my luck I would loose the dang thing! I do have a couple of pens at home that have a rubber top for that purpose, maybe I will give that a try. I hadn't thought of one before DD mentioned them.

Laptop with a 1gB SSD. I can synchronize all my files between a desktop and laptop PC. That gives me access to everything when we travel AND serves as another layer of data backup.

Old school here. I still have a desktop computer. I use a tablet, mostly for reading ebooks, but I also travel with it and use it for emails and web browsing. I only use my phone for texts, and sometimes calls and checking emails.

It's funny that the Samsung tablets I ordered yesterday are way more capable than our first desk top CPU that was a 486 dx, lol.

I'm probably going to purchase a keyboard case for the tablet or use an app like Google voice. If things work out I'm probably ditching the lap top.

Most apps already have built in voice to text capability. You can tap the microphone icon in the Google search bar, Messenger or Facebook to have it type out what you speak. No need for a separate app in most instances.

Google Voice is a different service like setting up a telephone number.

I have a tablet (11" iPad) that I bring as my only "computer" on most trips. 99% of the stuff I do is either accessible via a web browser or an app -- I don't use hardly any native Windows programs anymore. However, if I am planning on doing a fair amount of computer work on a trip, I will bring my laptop (very thin laptop), mostly for typing ease.

At home, I plug my laptop into my docking station at my desk, where I have full-sized wireless keyboard, mouse, speakers, and a 36" monitor. I use the laptop as a second display, so I have plenty of screen real estate. Tablets are great for traveling, but I want a full-size set up for home -- I would go nuts staring at a tiny tablet for all my computer work on a daily basis.

You can print from a Samsung tab or phone.

We go to the same school.

About 10 years ago, our office replaced desktops w-laptops and docking stations.
That was w/o consulting us worker bees who wailed about the loss of the desktops.
Catching up with times, I'm thinking about doing the same at home.

That said, I do also use an a Samsung tablet for games, email and browsing.

Tried to pay my Chase/Amazon bill over the weekend. Got a message that my desktop software was no longer compatible. Went to pay my bill with the iPhone Cliff gave me as a Christmas present in 2018, I couldn’t get logged in. Finally used his 2022 vintage phone to pay my bill. The handwriting is on the wall in big red letters that I’m going to need to spend money on new tech stuff.
