Air traffic control absences surge, hitting almost half of major US airports

My flight got cancelled because crew timed out.

Update - This is so crazy, we are back on because they found us a crew ... Going on 5 hour delay now.

Cancel a some private jet flights to help Air Traffic Control, think things would get worked out quicker

United said no cancelations to its hub but there are delays.
It's not that there would be no cancellations flying to/from hubs, it's that there wouldn't be cancellations on hub-to-hub flights. There is a difference. Practically every flight (there are a few exceptions, including on United) for the major legacy carriers flies to/from a hub. That's how their business models work. For United, their hubs are EWR, IAD, ORD, IAH, DEN, LAX and SFO, so flights between any two of those are the ones United is trying especially hard not to cancel.

Flights to foreign destinations from the US are not impacted as international agreements prohibit their inclusion, but domestic connecting legs can be problematic. My son is taking a TATL flight in a few days, and so far his connecting legs are okay.

Where possible, travelers may want to consider travel by train. Amtrak and Brightline are currently unaffected by the shutdown, although the trains are becoming full. I just travelled from Cincinnati to Charlottesville and will be driving to Williamsburg tomorrow. Train service is excellent in the NE corridor and in sections of Florida. BWI has an Amtrak station and MCO has a Brightline station.

I do wish that passenger train infrastructure was better here in the US. In addition to providing more choice/options, in some circumstances it can provide its own form of adventure and be a fun experience in and of itself.

As an alternate view
I’ve had the pleasure of driving the USA for the last year.
I’ve flown over a million miles plus but never took road trips as an adult. I’ve been embracing the things in America that are posative along the way.
Maybe instead of worrying over the airlines flying on time etc, get in the car, pack up the family and make an adventure of it. Embrace things you can’t change! Obviously this doesn’t work for Hawaii etc, so all you negative ninnies … please don’t chime in 🤣

Uh no. I've been going to NYC with my daughter for appointments she has at Columbia (she's in a medical trial). We fly out on Thursday and home on Sunday so that she won't miss much work. NOT going to drive that. And if I'm a negative ninny so be it.

Oh my
I will pray 🙏
I certainly didn’t mean you
Just so many people complain instead of finding alternate solutions
Please forgive me
I truly didn’t mean to offend you
And only wish the best ❤️

My daughter is flying home from LGA for Thanksgiving (leaving Tues night) and then taking the train back. I hope she'll arrive at some point on Wednesday, LOL....we'll see. The two trains a day from NYC on Wed were already pretty filled (which is why we fly her home. Well, that, plus miles.)

I know International United flights in/out of EWR were canceled yesterday. But they were not part of the ‘intentional’ 10%.

Loos like the end of the disruptions may be near and things back to normal (hopefully) by Thanksgiving with the Senate deal this afternoon.

Hasn't passed yet. And when/if it does Mike Johnson will have to bring the House back for a vote, then it will go to Trump. Let's not get too excited yet. I've that even after the shutdown ends it will take awhile to get back to "normal".

It will and you know why.

No, I don't know why. Why don't you enlighten me. And as I said even if it does, the House still has to come back and vote, and then it goes to Trump. It's not going be quick.

You are fairly intelligent and I'm sure you know why. My bet is things happen "warp speed", lol.

Yeah only fairly intelligent, obviously not as intelligent as you are as I still don't know why it will pass. But if you won't tell me does that mean you really don't know.

Since the house has been on vacation for weeks at a time, the members will have to remember where their offices are located
Where the best lunch and dinner houses are currently
Get spa and massage appointments rebooked
Then figure out where they sit and where are the buttons to vote
Busy, busy, busy
This will not go quickly

This will not go quickly

Definitely not quick enough for those stuck at airports, not getting paid or going hungry tonight.
