Hi All! I have searched around on Interval and also Marriott Vacation Club and don't find any places to trade for Japan. I was thinking about where my next destination should be and my kids are really interested in going to Japan. Has anyone ever found a way to trade for Japan or is the only option to do a hotel trade in Interval possibly to trade to this country?

Thanks to all for your input and advice on this!

Trish

Your TS ownership may not be best used on this trip.
Using your week or MVC points to book hotels through II or MVC are usually not cost effective.
Explore all options including booking hotels directly.

HGVC has several nice properties in Japan if you want to go down that route.

The Hilton resorts, while I am sure are very nice, are not in Tokyo. There is a new one in Kyoto but I also read someone's comment that it is a little out of the way.

I am planning a 1 week stay in Tokyo next year and I used Hyatt points (using a lot of Chase points that transfer 1:1) and booked 2 suites for 7 nights at the Hyatt House in Shibuya. The suites include a kitchen and washer/dryer.

Do they exchange on RCI?
Is there a way for OP to exchange his MVC or would this be a cash booking?
I’ve never seen HGVC deposits Japan weeks but could happen I guess. The best shot is to own some HGVC points and in some cases use open season for cash booking.

Those HC and HGVC sites are very popular, owner has to book at 9 Month window, so dont expect it will appear on RCI.

I just got back from a long stay in Kyoto and I’m looking at the location of the new resort. It looks like it’s right on the Karasuma line which is pretty nice. I’d stay there in a heartbeat if I found a way to book.

Can HGVC owners even book these properties at the nine month window?

So sounds like @smith_4 what I said above still holds- you would need a cash bookings and/or to explore the value of hotel bookings with your ownership on II or MVC (which usually is not good).

Yes. Like all the other bHCs outside of DC and NYC the Japanese bHCs don't have a Home Resort (nor bHC) reservation window. I've booked The Bay Forest Odawara at nine month using HGVC (not bHC) points.

Ditto. I had a brief hope that the Tradimo Kyoto Gojo might be open in time for our upcoming trip...but no (thread is in the HGVC forum).

I do have some Marriott Bonvoy points that I could see about using. That might be a better option. Thanks for your reply!

How did you like your visit there? I wanted to ask is it best to use public transportation or is it advisable to use a car and drive yourself for sight seeing? I believe they drive on the opposite side of the road - not sure how easy that is to adjust to.... Was curious about your experience while staying there. Thank you!

my kids are really interested in going to Japan
The topic moved toward Kyoto. I would just say that Kyoto is not the best city in Japan for kids, unless I am drastically missing something. Is manga, etc what interests them? I don't claim expertise in that age group for Japan, but Tokyo must be a much richer environment for that.

To each his own. You'd have to give more info about how long you are there, how rushed, etc. how old the kids are, whether you're terrified the kids will wander away in a train station, etc
We have visited Japan too many times to count. Outside of Kyoto and Tokyo, renting a car makes sense. ... maybe. Summer 2022, we spent a month in Kyoto. We did not rent a car. We used a taxi 3x. We used buses and trains the rest of the time. I can admit to being nervous the 1st morning I did it, all alone. But, the iPhone's directions app is awesome. It handled Kyoto like child's play. In a month, I got lost once. A bus I was on turned south when I wasn't paying attention, but I figured it out within 2 blocks. I pulled the cord, told the bus driver what happened and that I meant to go west. He gave me a bus pass, pointed at the bus stop across the street and told me which # bus to take.
Kyoto is a N-S, E-W grid. Just keep focused on an imaginary compass (or heck, bring a compass). On the trains, you have to get used to counting stops, which you mostly have to do in Tokyo subway anyways. And in Kyoto, having a car means you have to find parking at the major tourist sites.
I do not recommend a car in either Tokyo nor Kyoto, but we love to walk and are not afraid of Japanese words presented in romanji.

Of course, if you have a group of 4 or 5, it leans toward using a car.

memorize these words & learn to count to 10. Directions made easy
Hama = beach, kawa = river, bashi = bridge, gawa = next to or near, jima = island, kita = north, minami = south, higashi = east, nishi = west, hidari = left, migi = right, shin = new. "Old", I forget if I ever knew it. in place names the "original" seldom gets a special name. but you see "shin" a lot

once in a while gawa and kawa get swapped just to make it easier for the tongue, and it seems like it carries over to the signs. Same thing in English in some cases. A letter may change to make the words flow better.

In 2017, I spent the night at a lovely Hilton in Toyko. I think it cost me $47, all in. I'm not sure what the exchange rate is these days, but it might be more cost effective to just book direct.

Hilton hotels in Tokyo are great. Make sure you get Diamond status to go. Breakfast buffet is fantastic and a lot of food and drink offered at business lounge, free for Diamond.

This. I just always hesitate to tell TS people to not use their TS points when they seem determined to do so. But in Japan ... this ... agoda

My kids are young adults - ages 22 and 24 - both interested in seeing Tokyo. My daughter loves anime and K pop/J Pop and all things Asian. My son likes anime as well in addition to Japanese music specifically Casiopea which is his favorite musical group - a jazz band from Japan. Usually in past vacations we rent a car and do road trips but I have never driven on the other side of the road so would be a bit nervous adjusting to that. I would not use a car in Tokyo since we would use the subway for any traveling within the city. The car would only be used should we decide to venture outside of Tokyo to see the countryside which surely we would love to do. Thank you for your reply!

I've heard the prices are quite low for hotels so yeah this is an idea for sure - agoda or booking.com which is what I have used in past. Thank you for this suggestion!
