Key West properties- which would you recommend?

Have only been to Key West on cruise stops but was thinking staying a week. Which of the properties have a better location/plusses and minuses of Windward Pointe, Beach House and Sunset Harbor? Looking for an Interval exchange. Thanks for any input and travel advice to Key West too!

For II exchange, Sunset Harbor won't even be an option. I have never seen it show up in II. The other two are outside of the downtown proper and require a taxi, rideshare, bus or other transportation to get to downtown and Duval St. Parking is expensive downtown. Windward Point doesn't have a beach and is across the street from the water.

Some you have not mentioned The Banyan Resort, The Galleon and Coconut Beach Resort. All three trade in Interval. The Banyan is quaint. The Galleon is much larger with more amenities. Coconut Beach Resort is on the water. Where the banyan is my favorite, I have been to all three and would be happy to go to any of them.

The Banyan and Galleon are. Coconut Beach, still downtown, is further, just a longer walk or you can take the bus shuttle for $1.

The Banyan Resort is located one block over from the busy Duval Street. The perfect location to reach all the areas you likely would desire to visit. The Banyan Resort has mostly spacious studio and one bedroom units, however they do have a couple of two bedroom units as well. It's not ultra modern but very comfortable and gives you the true feeling as to what Key West was like 100 years ago. Many great restaurants within walking distance.

The Banyan doesn't have many units. The Galleon has a bunch of units (and a decent location). Sunset Harbor has the best location of all. But tends to be occupied by owners.


Since the island is only two-by-four miles; and since visitors are typically only interested in a half-mile square on the northwest side of the island; any resort is fine. Even Windward -- because the planes stop flying in the early evening and don't start until a reasonable hour in the morning. Tourists grouse about it. But Jimmy Buffett lived on the other side of the salt flats from Windward. (He was my down-the-street neighbor for quite awhile.) You deal with airplane noise in Key West. Just how it is. They're going to be flying over most of the town all morning and afternoon.


1) You don't want a car in Key West. Parking is impossible in Old Town. I lived there for decades with no car, by choice.
2) Even if you stay at the Beach House or Windward, just Uber to Old Town -- doesn't really matter where. Walk around until you're done for the day, and then Uber back.

I have stayed at the Galleon thru an exchange - and it is pretty large so a better chance of getting in. It is down by the marina and close to the action. Not fancy but great location. The rooftop tower is pretty cool.

We also have stayed at Sunset Harbor and Beach House. If you want a bit of peace and quiet, Beach House is a good location. If you want to be in the middle of the action, all of the other suggestions sound great.

I would not mind staying at Windward - just have not made it happen yet.

We own Hyatt Key West timeshares and a week at Banyan. We have stayed at all. If you want Hyatt, Sunset requires about an 18 month waiting list although we have gotten in during November with a six month advance notice. I prefer Windward for the drive into Old Town. It's easy to pull out and I love the drive along the Atlantic. You get the morning sun. Beach House is a nice resort; however, the traffic at that location is extremely heavy and the drive to Old Town is along a heavily commercial area. Both Beach House and Windward Pointe have tiki restaurants with sandwiches, light fare and cocktails. Banyan is in Old Town and no vehicle really required. It has a small tiki bar and light food on sight; however, many restaurants around the corner and on Duvall. It is an older property and somewhat dated as compared to the Hyatts. There are no in-room dishwashers nor washer/dryers in the units. There are no elevators if you are on the second floor.

We loved Beach House. Huge screened porch. Location not an issue, as we biked everywhere-including to dinner. Windward is right across the street from a beach, very nice, tropical pool area--it was very windy in April.

It should be noted that there is no beach across the street from Windward Pointe. There is water, but no beach.

Bicycles work well anywhere in Key West if one is comfortable on a bike. We biked back and forth from both Hyatts near the airport with no issue.

Yes we did as well but learned you need a good light as the sun goes down. We rented bikes with no lights and it was challenging getting home. Maybe pack one if you are renting

But, there are some beautiful views. Beach House is on water but right when you come over bridge so a good distance from downtown but also very nice views.

When renting a week at HSH from an owner or owner trade (withing the Hyatt system) the parking is something like $50.00 for the week. We like HSH because of the close proximity to Duval St., the LOOP, Malory Square. Walking towards the bight, one can take front street, or Greene. OR you can cut through Truman Annex (gates look about 6pm) to Caroline St. so you really do not need a car.

There is no place you can stay in Key West -- even Windward -- where you want a car. A car there is a liability.

Cabs cost much less and are more convenient. Don't need to worry about where to park your cab.

That may be true but the problem is it's not easy to fly into the airport there given the limited flights and they are typically very expensive, so people are flying into MIA and having to bring a car down there whether they want to or not.

That's a false economy. With the cost of the rental, gas and parking, it makes the ATL-EYW flight far more attractive. Nearly 20 cities have direct flights now. It's not like the old days where we had to fly to either MCO, FLL or MIA and then take a puddle-jumper the last leg.

Newark-Key West on United is showing $230 round trip on Google. I would have killed for that kind of pricing when I lived there.

We stayed at Windward last year (II exchange) and really enjoyed it. I was surprised to get a room with a beautiful ocean view…since we exchanged in, I figured we’d get a parking lot view! The pool is lovely, and since I prefer a nice pool to the beach, I didn’t mind the lack of a beach on-site. I don't remember any airplane noise, so I guess it didn’t bother me I would definitely go back!
