Apparently, both United and Delta have been charging extra for window seats, even if there is no window next to that seat..

The article states most of the other airlines exclude seats without windows from the extra fee.

Prediction: soon airlines will be labeling seats as "outside edge seats" and "aisle seats" -- no more "window seats".

I generally are OK with whatever someone wants to sell as long as they're honest about what they're selling. If I was told outside edge seat I wouldn't assume Window - but maybe many others would?

When I have selected seats on United and look at the seat map it doesn't say whether those seats are a window seat. They only show whether the seat is First Class, Economy Plus, Preferred or Economy. They also show for the Economy Plus that there is extra legroom, and for some of the exit row seats that there is no incline.

At least they'll still have seats and not plastic patio chairs.

Fair enough. They certainly shouldn't be charging a premium for non-window outside edge seats.

Actually, it seems to me that United sells the middle seats at a discount. They’re not charging more for window or aisle, they’re charging less for being squished between two other passengers.

We just flew Delta and didn’t pay extra for a window seat. We have also flown United often and always book a window seat. We have never paid extra for the window seat. I don’t think this is a complaint about paying extra for something you didn’t get but rather “I chose a window seat and didn’t get a window.”

I vote for "wall" instead. Outside edge will still confuse some people. But then again, some people might sue if they reserve a "wall" seat and are surprised to find a window spoiling their view of plastic paneling.

To be fair, some people may have anxiety if there is a window.
The issue here is really about being upfront about what you are selling and let the customers decide with their wallet.

I don't think this argument will fly, if you pay more for one seat vs the other, then you are paying more.
While the aisle and window seats typically cost the same and the middle seat is cheaper a person who selects a window seat vs a middle seat can rightly claim to have purchased it with the understanding that they will get a window. If they end up with a panel, then they could argue they didn't get their money's worth.
