I have to admit I like this very much.

I had to edit my post; apparently later on it then adds the mini horses back in as service animals. But yes, I also like the fact that people can't pass off peacocks, gerbils, and every other creature they can imagine as a "service animal."

Reddit… I liked the two questions hotel and timeshare managers can asked a guest with a service animal.

Reddit's askhotels group is a good source of information about this subject matter. Oftentimes, hotel employees will engage in discussions along the lines of "what does your hotel do?".

Apparently, it is believed to be commonplace that people bring their pets and fraudulently say that they're necessary service animals. And there's no way of telling if the dog (or miniature horse) has really been trained to detect seizures developing or low blood sugar or whatever (there's many more things that service animals can allegedly do). And the ADA does NOT allow any front desk person/hotel manager to ask for any written documentation to that effect.

So, if you know how to answer those questions, Rover is IN. Even if Rover is the least trained, goofiest dog imaginable, it must and will be deemed a service animal with lifesaving skills.

I don’t know … Reddit is known for having a bunch of askhotels on their site 🏴‍☠️🤷🫏

I've never seen an ADA mini horse in real life. I've seen mini horses and wonder what ADA service they could actually do without making up some ridiculous task. Same goes for pigs.

I guess the animal has to have two characteristics that makes them suitable for being a service animal:

1) they have to have the mental capacity to be trainable to both (a) detect something like a seizure on the verge of happening or low blood sugar and (b) react a certain way to that emergency.

and (2) they have to have the dispostion to not ignore it.

For example, I don't want to offend cat lovers, but maybe (or maybe not...but for the sake of argument...) cats can detect a seizure about to happen or a person's low blood sugar. But the cats I know of seem to always be kind of aloof. I can see them keep licking themselves even if they could detect a life threatening event. They could care less whereas a dog might immediately "alert" and start going nuts.

So it's surprising to hear that a mini horse can be trained to not only detect but also to react in a certain way that would be responsive to the emergency. But I guess that indicates that they can while other animals might not.

*Saw this posted at a Wyndham/WorldMark site, which states it in plain English that no ESAs are allowed (just like most of us feel)..
TY!

Now if only the GM and Assistant GM at Worldmark by Wyndham at Windsor would enforce their own Rules. When I complained in the past they attacked me.

There was a cute little white poodle with its tail dyed pink sitting in a woman’s lap at NCV’s bar today. It’s was right up at the bar by the lady’s food…almost looked like she was feeing it. Disgusting. There were two Marriott representatives by the grill restaurant area where you get the food, and I went up and said, “I thought there weren’t supped to be pets here.” They apologized and said yes, that was true and they were doing a check, but that they told them it was a service dog. How interesting that later on, the couple and dog left the bar and walked right by us by the pool..but the man was now walking it…so was it a service animal for the lady or the man??? And don’t service animals stay on the floor? Or do they sit up at the bar? I know this isn’t a Marriott thread, but I just think it’s out of control…it’s right up at the bar counter. My aunt and uncle, and a nice couple friend we know used to train seeing eye dogs, and they always sat on the ground…you really didn’t know they were even there. But this is a whole new level. I also have seen two carpet cleaning vans on the property with the long hoses going inside which I have never seen before. It’s very frustrating, as we did not purchase a dog friendly timeshare here 20 years ago….and our maintence fees will continue to rise if this keeps up.

The problem is lack of training for staff. They are legally allowed to ask two questions to verify the animal is for service. These questions will weed out the numbskulls that bring their pets.

A true service dog will be at his/her owner feet in a restaurant.

Problem : No hotel/timeshare employee can afford to have a paying customer to file a negative complaint against them.

One bad written complaint can be the kiss of death for their career.

Agree 100%!
It is everywhere now, across all TS co's...
Lots of younger folks are not having kids and have 'fur babies'...
Many seniors also have grown adult children (& don't travel with them) and/or may have pets as their primary companions...
I see both groups of folks bring pets to TS locations...

If it’s becoming a trend
Why not simply designate specific buildings to that
Maybe even specific pool areas
Similar to adult only
Just saying

Better idea: follow the existing rules and don't bring your pet. It is clear that the vast majority of timeshare owners don't want pets allowed.

Hear me out
If it’s trending toward people “illegally” bringing dogs to properties why not potentially use it as a new revenue steam
Designate specific buildings and units for pets, establish a fee schedule that benefits the owners
I’ll give you an example
If I travel alone or with friends I don’t bring a pet, that opens me to multiple networks
If I travel with my youngest son who has a dog we choose Westgate or Vacation Village, recently Massanutten opened up a specific area with fees to bring his dog, therefore we choose that location. From a business point of view, if people are. Doing it anyway and disregarding the rules why not find a way to designate an area and make $ out of it?

It's tough to enforce. You can only legally ask two questions. Is the service animal required because of a disability ? The person says yes. The next question would be what service the animal performs ? The person can say many things such as alerts me on my medical condition, helps me walk, can assist me with my medications, can help me get up and many other valid reasons. You aren't allowed to ask what the persons disability is.

The problem with this is that this designated building will be lacking in some amenities that the "regular" buildings" get. Then there is the potential for a lawsuit based on discrimination against those with "support" animals. Yeah, I know...but it'll happen.

Cheers.

Yeah, good luck with that...unfortunately. Entitlement is on the rise.

Cheers.

The problem is that the resort staff aren't even asking the questions. Over time people will learn to make stuff up, but if they know they will be asked/challenged, they may be less likely to try and flaunt the rules in the first place. Also, is one permitted to bring two service animals to a resort? I've seen, on at least two occasions, where someone was walking in or around the resort with two dogs.

Yep, that is so true. They would cry discrimination. Plus why on earth reward those who break the rules??? Uphold the standards that the owners bought into when they purchased. Animals do seem to have more rights than humans it seems when it comes to allergies and hotels and airplanes. I remember about 8 years ago when people started bringing pet on the planes, a child had a terrible allergic reaction…they made it sound like it was the parents fault(apparently they should have brought an EpiPen or Benadryl), and they had to get off and take a flight the next day. It’s crazy!
Hey, if any of these big companies want to make a pet friendly timeshare, I say go for it. I will never step foot in one. We have never had pets, and when I vacation, I don’t want to see pets sitting up at the bar like a baby. That turned my stomach yesterday…funny, no one else was sitting up at the bar…I mean who wants to sit where a dog is up licking at the plate of food at the bar??? Yuck. I don’t want to see people blatantly breaking the rules because they feel entitled. It’s soooo rude to people who actually DO need a service dog. It’s a terrible example for kids, and frankly, it’s gross and unhygienic.
As for converting building of existing pet free timeshares to placate those who are already breaking the rules…no way. It’s not right to make an existing no pet timeshare pet friendly all of a sudden. Plus, look at where I am…NCV… you would have to build a whole other bar and grill, indoor kids area, a different check in area, doggie run area, etc, etc, and believe me, I am sure people with their animals would STILL come into the areas where they are not supposed to be….I mean why wouldn’t they…rules don’t apply to them?!! And we would be paying way more in maintenance fees to pay for their animals’ vacations. The only way to stop this entitlement is to enforce the rules. Otherwise, why have any rules? But any logical person know that rules exist to maintain peace, safety, and standards and are very necessary in society.
I’ll stop my rant.
