We are checking in there on Saturday and had looked into a few parking options outside of the outrageous parking fees at HHV. We are staying on a club point stay. What options are there for parking. Not having a car isn't really an option since we already have it for part of our stay and returning it early won't work, plus things are just easier with a vehicle.

If you’re staying 5 or more nights you’re better off parking at the monthly rate at Hale Koa next to the Grand Islander. Otherwise, there is inexpensive daily parking in the marina next to the Lagoon Tower.

We’ll be there for seven nights.

Then it depends on which tower you're staying in (and how often you'll want to use the car while you're there). The marina is closer to Lagoon and GW, Hale Koa is closer to GI and Kalia is something of a push.

Once upon a time the downside of parking in the marina was that you had to visit your car and repay every day but my understanding is that you can now do this via your phone (though I have never done so myself). Also, I didn't mention that you have a valid DOD ID parking at Hale Koa is less expensive.

We had young adult family members that we put into the Modern next door using DEX reservations. Parking is $28/night with owner discount so we used that option for parking. Normally we stay without a car and rent for the day if we need one.

I’ve parked in the marina or just rent a car on the days I need one.

When I was there. I parked in the marina and played the game with the meter and the free spots that open up during the day next to the lagoon. So pay the meter when returning at night from whatever adventure or activity you do. And just move the car to a free spot that opens in the morning. If I remember correctly, there are free spots that have a limited time window during the day. It’s a little inconvenient to do this, but it gave me an excuse to do a little morning walk every day and get some exercise in.

Marina no longer has meters on Ilikai side, it's a QR code on your phone (was there last month), $1.00 per hr. You just have to pay in advance on phone, so you need to know when you are leaving the resort.

Is that 24 hours/day, so $24/day? In that case, parking at Hale Koa works out better beyond 9 days. But the idea of doing day rentals when needed (so no parking at all) is appealing. A little extra work to go and get the car each time, but could be worth it if the use duty cycle is low.

Cheers.

Yes but you must be a Veteran for Hale Koa. Yes the lot is 24 hours but who leaves the car that long? And yes, I have rented by the day for a car, that is an option.

You do not need to be a veteran. The $225 rate I alluded to above is for general public. Military gets a better rate. As for the car - if not used on some days it is there 24 hours. If you take it away, I guess you have to know in advance when you're going to have paid up until that time? And then initiate another payment when you get back, estimating when you'll next take it? If that's really the case, that's too much work for me :)

Cheers.

This discussion comes up all the time... I'm in the no car club, just a daily rental for a circle island tour. Uber, Charley's cabs, or the bus for the rest. Most excursion companies pick you up at HHV.

Visiting Don Quixote store is a fun experience, grab lunch at one of the restaurants there.

You forgot to mention Buzz's Steakhouse!

mrs. brp went to grad school here so there are places to go and people to visit. And they're off the beaten path in some cases. With that said, we likely did not need a 14 day rental for our 14 day trip. We needed it maybe half or a little more of the time.

Cheers.

That really wasn't the question though. For us, no car isn't an option as we are already in the middle of a 15 day rental. So we need a place to park that car. Given our personal circumstance, using rideshare and the bus simply doesn't work logistically.

We are staying in Lagoon Tower. I don't like the constant babysitting idea of the marina so I think we will try the monthly rate at Hale Koa. We are also staying a single night at the MVC Waikiki property. I may actually use Hale Koa for all 8 nights we are there as parking at the MVC property is $55 for valet. I know the walk will be a chug, but can do that for one night.

Can a veteran or an eligible federal employee receive the discount parking rate if they are staying at the Halo Koa Resort?

Could you not just overpay slightly for the parking. Say you don't know when you are leaving, you just say 24 hours? Then if you leave early, who cares as long as you are okay paying the extra cost for a space you aren't using? It would still have to be cheaper than parking at HHV?

There is also the Illikai Marina Parking Garage $33/night its near the harbor parking. We did an informal assessment on distance and it looks like its 0.3-0.4 miles to the resort. We haven't used it yet, but we are not willing to pay $70/night in parking along with resort fees.

I suppose if you have convinced yourselves a car is necessary, but there is nothing stopping you from turning it in early. We were at Hokulani last month for five days without a car.

Take uber to the resort and rent a car onsite for the days needed?

It shouldn't be too long of a walk if you walk across the grassy area from Hale Koa to Saratoga/Kalakaua streets. When we were there in May they were doing road work on Kalia road leading up to the Hale Koa parking garage. Hale Koa may be the most cost effective if you are doing 8 nights.

Often it's not a question of "convincing" oneself as if it is some kind of personal mind game. Sometimes, based on one's plans, it really is necessary, no "convincing" needed. It happens.

Cheers.

In my mind the real question is, ‘Do you have in and out privileges if you reserve for 8 nights?’ I haven’t parked at the Marina since they changed over to the QR code so don’t know.
