Anyone notice a slowdown in travel?

I haven't noticed any drop in prices for our next winter flights. I haven't noticed any inventory available at this point in time for our winter trips. I'm still looking for others that want to join us but it's just not happening yet. I haven't noticed car rental prices going down either.

This morning Lowes had mulch for $2 a bag. That was a pretty good deal. I was talking to a Lowes manager and he said that no one is buying anything like in previous years so they are over stocked on many items.

I have not noticed much in the way of airfare price drops either, but have read that United, Delta, and Southwest have all announced capacity cuts domestically.

I think people have "retail Fatigue." Target has been dropping for quite a while. My sister said she LOVES Target. Then admitted she hadn't shopped there in years, not since her kids were at home. I feel the same way about Costco. Most of their items are not very good (an employee talked me out of buying a mower) and other items are so over the top. Do we really need any more backyard toys? We may have reached our saturation point.

I'll be going to Westin Desert Willow in August for my usual desert fix. I'll be curious to see if it's noticeably quieter compared to previous years. I sort of doubt it, though; fewer international travelers will probably be offset by more people, like me, who are local to the region.

Other than that, I have no travel plans for the remainder of the year, but that's because I just came back in February from an epic 35-day trip to Africa, which I'd planned a year earlier, plus the fact that we're moving to a new house soon (which has also been in the works for a year).

Next year we might do a cross-country driving vacation, similar to one we did a few years ago. And another desert TS stay or two. There are still some other European destinations I want to visit, but those trips will have to wait.

I am personally not traveling as much this year as I did last year. I have been accompanying my daughter on some trips and she's cut back for this year. I do have a trip planned to Canada in September that I am looking forward to.

I have already been to NYC for a short trip with my daughter, three weeks on Maui with husband and both daughters. Future trips, besides Canada, will be Boston and NYC (twice).

We're also not traveling as much as we did last year - S. Am., Canada E. and W, & HI, But we still have a 12 day Great Lakes cruise scheduled for June, a 10 day meandering around the Colorado mountains in July/August, a 14 day France trip in October, and a quick 5 days in Tahoe next month. We've already done a Victoria and a Savanah trip this year. Lord willing and the creek don't rise, next year will be the Greek islands, Victoria (our favorite go to), N.E. US, and maybe Florence. Since Lahaina burned, we're not keen on a yearly Maui journey anymore, but may do Poipu again. Hopefully, inflation will come under control this year, otherwise 2026 plans may be modified.

I had a bunch of HGVC places booked for June in Waikoloa and then re-booked them when they recently went on sale (points).

Travel ahead is looking good for us. We just won't be taking money out of our retirement accounts to travel.

Driving trips are in the forecast for May and October. Cruise in November. Flying everywhere else. Looking forward to our next trips to Palm Beach in June and Maui in August for 3 weeks. Rick keeps saying he will never get the gazebo built in our backyard. It's mostly done, except the roof, the tricky part. It's the landscaping around the gazebo that is really the concern, I think.

My regular weeks that I rent out, went untouched this year. That hasn't happened since the first year of covid.

I am seeing less requests.

I noted this in one of the threads in the Sightings forum. There does seem to be a lot more fall inventory available in II in certain resorts where the past few years there was very little. This could be because the last few years were heavily traveled coming out of covid and perhaps things are easing back to where they were. Did travel ever really get back to pre covid levels?

I also think we will see some easing just because people may be traveled out or don't want to spend as much on travel. A lot of people traveled in the "revenge travel" era. Perhaps traveled more than they usually did. Or perhaps they only traveled once every few years and the year they did travel happened to also coincide with the post covid peak travel era. I think we actually started to see some slowdowns in demand in 2024 with some here reporting that they had lots of weeks go unrented. It is just hard to compare because the last five years have been unprecedented in recent history and we often forget what things were like 10-15 years ago.

So you think we're returning to a baseline? How were things 10 years ago?

I don't really know, though I don't know that 10 years ago is a baseline. These market segments and industries do grow over time. I looked up some stuff after typing that message and it was noted that travel levels seemed to only return to pre pandemic levels in 2024. So I think our outlook on this can be kind of skewed by how we remember certain things over time. I always had the impression that the revenge travel coming out of the pandemic was higher than travel ever was, but that doesn't seem to be the case. So I don't know if there is really a good baseline to go off of.

Yea, the reason I asked is that my TS experience didn't start till 2023, so I have no "historical" view really. I also thought that "revenge travel" was a high water mark lol. I haven't seen "low amounts of people" on my recent trips - but that's not based on anything. I wonder if this time of year Nashville or Smokey Mountains or New Orleans should be expected to be busy but able to walk into many restaurants? I think it's just lower season, but what do I know?

I think timeshare is also a unique animal in the travel industry. Traditionally timeshares run very high occupancy rates because it is use it or lose it. You pay the maintenance fees no matter what. Though there are people that never use their timeshares but then the industry has ways for the developer to take and monetize that inventory instead. The only time I saw empty timeshare resorts was during covid, and we traveled a lot during covid. Occupancy rates for timeshares can often run 90% for the year where a hotel or resort may be lucky to average 60% only getting to 90% during peak seasons.

I travel 3-4 trips per month. All the plains are full and many of the hotels are sold out. Some hotel prices have improved, but I haven't seen any improvements in airfare.

Europe in June and South Africa in September. Japan if we can ever book air with points.

and many of the hotels are sold out. Some hotel prices have improved
So I have for the first time found Hilton locations not always available to book in the app on the day on road trips. So there is that - I think before the last year I saw way fewer hotels sold out. So that is true that there's a lot more people staying in the hotels than I'd have expected.

This year I’m relieved to only be going to Vermont for week (renting a timeshare in Stowe via Vacasa) and our timeshare less than an hour away from our home for another week. No flying anywhere! Will be enjoying the summer right here!

We have old friends in Staten Island, NY who we haven’t seen in many years that wanted us to visit them for an afternoon reunion gathering and we thought we might go and also visit a close friend of mine who’s turning 90 who lives not far from them in Bayonne, NJ , but honestly the thought of 6 1/2 hour ride not even considering traffic, plus staying in some crappy hotel in Staten Island for three nights and then driving back to NH I don’t think we will be doing that either.

Makes me kind of sad because we saw these friends every year at our house where we had an annual get together our whole adult lives. And the 90 year old used to be my neighbor and coworker when we lived in NY. I know if we don’t go now we never will and will never see them again, but my husband would be the one driving ( I don’t drive in big cities like NY) and he’s not crazy about that drive. It’s not a nice, relaxing type ride.

We’re getting old I guess.

Our travel plans have not changed. We spent 3 weeks in Australia (Phillip Island, Melbourne, and Hobart) this Winter. We are about to leave on a 3 week trip to Southern California. In August/September we have a 4 week trip to Canada (Vancouver and Canmore). In November we have our Annual Week in Seaside, Oregon.

How old is old? Patti and I are both 71.
Yes. We aren’t really that old it’s true. Hubby is 71 and I’ll be turning 69 in June.

However, once I turned 65 out of the blue I started to suddenly not feel too well and less energetic. When I get out of bed I feel like I got hit by a truck. I was always a morning person, but now it takes me quite a while to get moving.

Long story short, after being tested for female problems that were inconclusive, I actually ended up with spine surgery in 2023 that ‘caused another back issue which is unresolved. I haven’t slept well since. I’m never without some pain. Sometimes I limp.

I had to give up hiking with the local recreation club. Plus certain things like even dancing are harder for me now. Too much bending puts a strain as well.

Of course, my knees hurt, too. Lol!

This is the opposite of who I was only just a few years ago.

Then later I ended up with high cholesterol, and just recently high blood pressure ( I was always low - normal) and a chronic cough/ mucus problem ( supposedly is silent GERD). I’m on 4 meds after never being on any.

I have no stress and I exercise almost daily since I was 38 yrs old.

My husband has always had high blood pressure. He does his “steps” every day in the basement ( I kid you not. He doesn’t like the hills outside). He was never a high energy type, but he has always held his own stamina wise.

We both are starting to have vision issues- cataracts. His worse than mine. One of his eyes is very blurry. He’s waiting for a consultation appt. We avoid most night driving and also our energy levels are lower in the evening, though we’ve been at some neighbors’ house parties until past midnight a few times.

I’m impatient. He’s a bit better with that than me. We know our limitations, what we will or will not tolerate, and what we enjoy. We like to pace ourselves and try to avoid stress as much as possible.

With travel- Flying and everything it entails stresses me out. Too much traffic or crowds stresses both of us out. We like a more relaxed style of travel. That’s why we always liked timeshares, especially drive to ones.

Anyway, I guess I’m just not aging well. I compare myself to other people even much older than me and it truly depresses me because they seem to be much more energetic. My 76 year old neighbor friend is still hiking and traveling. My 87 year old neighbor is biking and walking up the steep hills around here. I walk for an hour outside and then I have to sit or lay down. My legs stiffen up. My back hurts.

So this is where we’re at now. Thankfully we’ve mostly seen and done what we wanted to, with just a few exceptions. Passports expire in 2026 and I doubt we’ll renew them. And no Real ID for us.

I don’t mean to sound like we’re decrepit. We push on and we still do quite a lot of stuff. It’s just on a different scale now.

I've found that we're unlucky - we've never had high energy. I had an 80 yo relative when I was like 34 and they just had both hip surgeries and I could not keep up with him climbing a hill. Some people are just outliers. I also find now at 43ish I am doing better than my much younger sister who just has some medical issues - some people are just low energy.

Thing is I never was low energy. Only now this has happened to me.
