We are at Marriott's Legends Edge and have a view out to one of the greens for the Baypoint Golf Course. So I've seen a lot of golfers come through. Do golfers no longer finish out the hole? So many times (perhaps 75%) I see that the golfers don't finish out their puts. They may putt one or two times but then pick up the ball. No tap ins and it's like they think that 2' putt is a gimme yet I know it probably isn't given how their previous putts were.

I golfed for a few years in my 20s, many years ago, and never remember doing this when I golfed and don't remember any of the golfers I played with doing it either. Is this the new norm? Has @#1 Cowboys Fan seen this too?

It’s common for my friends and I when we play. Especially after two putts. It helps with the pace of play, which most golfers appreciate.

It is not the norm among golfers I play with, but I have seen it with many golfers. Too many begging for a gimme, and even calling their own.

Sounds liked the age group between 20-40. They are always in a hurry. LOL

I am always amazed by golfers who hit it FAR, FAR...... first with a Driver down the fairway.....then with an Iron HIGH and LONG onto the green.
They then putt from 20 feet, ending 4 feet away......and PICK UP THE BALL!!!

I suspect there is about a 40% chance they miss those.... I think it's great they've hit the ball well....but what is your SCORE for the hole??

There is a gimme term, "inside the leather", meaning if your ball is close enough to the hole and you lay the putter down it's inside the leather grip. Most people I golf with pick up instead of tapping in gimmes, easier to scoop the ball with the putter head than bend over to get it out of the hole. The only time we have to putt out is during tournament play.

This has become lazy, cheating, lack of integrity golf. Most amateurs will miss many putts inside 3 feet. Gimmes are only allowed in match play, where the opposing player gives it. Otherwise, is is plain cheating. Either play by all the rules or play by none.

I play golf twice a week with my wife and during the winter months with many snowbird friends, we just play casually. I play for my score. So I do finish out my hole. I compete against myself and try to improve my score. We are not playing against each other.

Some people we go with don't even keep score. Some are really only going for exercise. Most of these people don't finish out the hole. I would have to guess that a high percentage of the rounds of golf are played like this.

As long as you are not in any type of competition or saying you're a scratch golfer, it really doesn't matter.

We play snowman meaning if a golfer is at 8 strokes they are done keeping score and they can putt out or not.

We play a modified stableford with no points after a double so pick up and go to the next hole

If we are putting for par or birdie you have to putt. If it’s for bogey or higher, pick it up and move on. Nothing higher than triple bogey also. We play skins, one dollar per hole.

Our ladies league has a rule to pick up during non championship play at a number based on your handicap
I had two years off and my handicap was based on 2022 scores when I was younger and healthier. I have to pick up at seven and 16 holes have you hitting over ponds. so on one hole with ponds in two locations I often say I’m out before I reach the green.

This is pretty much what we do when playing non-competitively. We have a group of 12 or so players, mostly single digit handicaps, and we put $20 into a skins pot. Nobody is winning a skin with anything above par, so gimmes for bogey or higher are fine. If you're in your pocket, you get a double.

I disagree. It can matter if you care about becoming a better golfer, and also is very strange. These people are not golfing. They are playing something else.

I was a golfer when I was in the corporate world years ago - they discarded my shots in "Best Ball" tournaments
But I did much better on the bowling team!

We have a best ball group every year. The proceeds are for scholarships awarded to High School Grads.

Most of our golfing is for kicks and giggles and often includes a few drinks. I'm definitely not a real golfer but it's fun all the same.

I guess that's my point, I think you are underestimating the amount of people that don't care about being a better golfer. Many people just aren't competitive but still enjoy the exercise and comrade. Many times they find people of like mind to play with.

For myself, I would say they are golfing. Maybe not truly by the rules or keeping score but I can understand what you mean. We can disagree, no big deal.🤙🏻

I play 80-100 rds a year. Tournament play, you finish out. On a casual afternoon with golfing buddies, putt out for Birdie or better regardless of length, inside the leather otherwise. I understand the "rules" but too often we watch foursomes a hole or more behind grinding over 2 foot putts, then they miss them and pick it up anyways. After following many of these groups for 4 hours you know that it isnt for Birdie every hole LOL. If your keeping pace, finishing on time, then it doesn't matter, but in my experience most time is lost on/around the greens.

I putt out every hole as I also played alot of tournament golf. The 3 and 4 putts are a real killer. I play for 2 different clubs, representing the clubs in inter club leagues. I also compete in our club's individual match play and I am playing in my semi-final match next week. Then there are also member-member and member-guest tournaments. Putting is actually the make or break part of the game.
