To sing along or not to sing along. That is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the seat to suffer cracked and warbled dissonances or to take action against ill-mannered boors and by opposing end them.
 
Decades ago, singing and dancing at certain theaters was a normal thing with the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Probably still is. I remember, doing the time warp, drinking those moments when the blackness would hit me and the void would be calling.

I think there is a time and place to singalong and have fun, but they need to be planned events. Some people want to enjoy the movie as it was intended. There is room for both. Be respectful of the people around you who may not share your enthusiasm.

I saw the Wicked movie this past weekend. I absolutely loved it. Yes, I know every word to every song in the Broadway soundtrack. I've seen the play on Broadway, and in several touring productions since. The movie added even more to the story, filled in some blanks, and gave me three hours of complete escapism entertainment. I'd see it again today, and I will buy it when it is available for home viewing.

And yes, I silently lipsynced through every song, silently singing in my head, right along with the actors on the screen. I gave them their opportunity to play the parts they were in, and I enjoyed myself, very much. And so did everyone else in the theater. it was a good time.

As for some people's concerns about the cast, I had questions, too, but I thought everyone did a fantastic job. I was thinking Ariana Grande was miscast, until I saw her on the screen. She was magnificent in the role. The rest of the cast was equally good, and collectively, they brought the story to life. The direction was superb, cinematography was spectacular, things flowed easily and comfortably, and I was almost sad when it ended - three hours later. Just an amazing experience. I cannot say enough good things about this movie.

If you see it, please sing to yourself, unless it's a singalong showing. I've seen those being advertised in some cities. Have fun!

It took a long time for Rocky to become a cult classic. It was a miserable flop at theaters when it came out in 1975. It was only a few years later after intolerant people in New York started talking back to the screen that it started to grow into something so much larger than the movie itself. I've had a lot of fun at those midnight showings starting around 1980 in California, along with a crazy cast of characters who were having fun right alongside me.

It's just a jump to the left...

I think that if they were smart, theater managers could lean into it with special showings with costumes and themed treats. Just let the patrons know at the time they buy their tickets.

Quite a few years back went to a sing along version of the movie "Mama Mia". So much fun.

I'm still not sure about seeing "Wicked". It was not one of my favorite musicals, I don't really care for the story, and I don't see why it needed to be made in two parts. My daughter really wants to see it so I may end up going, but I really don't want to.
 
Some friends saw Wicked last weekend. They are both fans of the Broadway show but did not care for the movie. My main take away was that the flying monkeys would be too scary for young children (but then weren’t they always?? I hated them!).

Yup, the flying monkeys were a problem for the very young me and then came the movie The Birds and birds became the problem until I had a 25 cent sling shot, lol.

Don't overanalyze the movie. It's darker than the play, because it's based on the book the play was taken from. The movie is worth seeing if only for the sets, scenery, incredible dancing, and the performances of the assorted cast. It is NOT a movie for kids, I don't care who they are. Seriously. Leave them at home.

It's also a timely story, given the subtext of a lot of the theme going on. [Not getting political here. PM me if you want to know why I think this is so strong right now in our society.]

The reason it was made in two parts is because there is SO much to the story, it couldn't be told in less time, and do it justice. Also, the movie studio insisted on two movies, so they could milk as much money from it as they could. This first half had a budget of $145,000,000. They no doubt used a tremendous amount on the sets, and the CGI involved. It looks flawless.

I'd see this movie again anytime.

I read the book. It is very dark. That is why I don't like the story. I tried to read his other books and just couldn't get into them.

This story is not based on the L. Frank Baum novel. This one is from the Gregory Maguire novel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicked_(Maguire_novel)

He has an entire series of books based against the Baum books. A rather fascinating genre, actually.

Would you mind elaborating on why you think that? We actually took our kids to the musical on Broadway earlier this month, and they both loved it. One said it was the best part of the trip, while the other ranked it second to the Natural History Museum. I had been planning to take them as the usual reviewers I check for kid-friendliness seemed to think it was ok - but I try to be careful with their media consumption so am definitely interested in a dissenting opinion on that.

I’ve had that movie on reserve from the library for a month. Only way I can get it without paying for it. I fear it has been lost or deleted from their inventory. A community theater group does perform it every year with audience interaction.

Marketing is everything. They know if kids want the toys, the parents will spend the money. The movie itself is easy to gloss over the deeper subtext, so might appeal to kids with all the glitz and glamor, and they won't understand what's really happenng. But a lot of the dialogue is double-entendre, and if it's taken at intneded face value, it's a much more adult-oriented thing.

There's even a scene where Fiyero and Elphaba are in the woods. He's buttoning his shirt cuffs, obviously dressing himself. He has a scratch on his face, and she touches him there, which shows her very long fingernails. Obviously, they'd just done the deed, and she'd scratched him. Pretty adult scene, tbh.

But what do I know? It's been a long time since my kids were little. :D
