Don't overanalyze the movie. It's darker than the play, because it's based on the book the play was taken from. The movie is worth seeing if only for the sets, scenery, incredible dancing, and the performances of the assorted cast. It is NOT a movie for kids, I don't care who they are. Seriously. Leave them at home.
It's also a timely story, given the subtext of a lot of the theme going on. [Not getting political here. PM me if you want to know why I think this is so strong right now in our society.]
The reason it was made in two parts is because there is SO much to the story, it couldn't be told in less time, and do it justice. Also, the movie studio insisted on two movies, so they could milk as much money from it as they could. This first half had a budget of $145,000,000. They no doubt used a tremendous amount on the sets, and the CGI involved. It looks flawless.
I'd see this movie again anytime.
