4 of the Most Controversial Banned Songs Ever Pulled From Radio

I would have expected other famous songs to have made that list.

Fortunate Son comes to mind. I remember calling into a request line and being denied a request of this song It was a Vietnam protest song They said.

Same thing happened to me. After I made the request, I could hear the DJ ask someone else in the booth "Can I play Fortunate Son?" followed by another voice saying "No".

I Dig Rock and Roll Music lyrics
Peter, Paul and Mary

[Verse 4]
I dig, ho ho, rock and roll music
I could really get it on in that scene
I think I could say somethin'
If you know what I mean

But if I really say it
The radio won't play it
Unless I lay it
Between the lines

I recall 'The Pusher' by Steppenwolf being banned by a lot of radio stations when it came out. It was a great song and the 'damn' was referring to the pushers.

Holly came from Miami FLA

Is how a popular Lou Reed song starts that really pushed the limits in both sexuality and drugs.

It should be said FM radio in the 70's was still a bit "underground" and could play songs that Top 40 AM stations had black listed.

The BBC. who freaked out over "Relax", also banned the album version of "Lola", not for any sexual reason, (Which they might have even missed). but for the use of the words "Coco Cola"

I have the original 45 rpm version of "Society's Child" by Janis Ian in my vinyl collection. I can't say I remember it being banned or even controversial at the time, at least not here in Canada, but maybe my memories fade?

One song I did expect to see in the list of four was "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus" by Serge Gainsbourgh and Jane Birkin. I do remember it being banned at the time on a number of radio stations due to its "very suggestive" lyrics and also due to the age difference between Gainsbourg and Birkin. I still have that orginial 45 rpm in my vinyl collection, too. Jane Birkin, OBE, passed away about 16 months ago.
